Default '85 CC, worth fixing up?

Picked up a '85 CC in running shape and ok looking. Plan on getting a liftkit, new batteries, and rear seat, etc. Mainly to drive around the neighborhood with buddies on theirs, but don't want to put $$$ into and it still be slow and them leave me in the dust. Can I hang with the budies 36V carts with new batteries? I believe they have mid-late 90 carts

If your buddies have mid to late 90's 36 volt with resistor carts you should be ok once you get the 1985 in good condition. BUT if you are wanting to run with modern 1995 and up 48 volt solid state controlled carts you will need to spend many dollars to upgrade? The resistor carts waste much battery power by heating the resistor coils while later models 48 volts use every bit of battery power for performance.
Remember that stock golf carts are made for speeds up to about 12-15 MPH and anything above that empties the billfold fast.

That depends on whether your buddies have resistor or controller carts. Reason being, the resistor carts waste amperage to run at any speed less than wide open.
A controller cart will run stronger longer than a resistor cart .........
At wide open you guys should be equal except for any big differences in weight, aerodynamics, wheel drag, and battery strength.
Keep your cart light and fast

Thanks for the insight...newbie here and my first cart. Mine has 5 solenoids and my buddies has 1 with a "brush". Not sure if that helps any...

I'll be re-wiring and new batteries this week, so we'll see...

If you are changing the 6 guage wiring this would be a good time to upgrade to 4 guage "welding cable multi stranded cable throughout"? ( batterys, F&R control, motor, solenoid )
Be sure to get "golf cart batterys" rather than auto type or marine batterys that will not allow you the power and speed you may want to keep up with the buddies?

$800, no charger, batteries worked but over 5 years old. It's amazing what a nice paintjob does. I almost bought a $500 CC in really bad shape, but saw this and figured it would same me time $$ on the fix up. liftkits on the '85 shouldn't be a problem right?
