Measure state of charge (discharge)
I am interested which voltage should be used as a guideline to determine the battery pack's state of charge? Do I use the number measured immediately following a ride or should I use the number after the battery has recovered?
As an example, the other day I drove my cart for 31 miles. At the end of the trip I measured the voltage of the pack and it was 48.6. I then let the battery pack "recover" allowing it to rest for 45 minutes. The voltage now had climbed to 49.5. According to the charts one is about 55% and the latter is about 70%. Which should I use as a guideline to ensure I never discharge the pack more than 50%? Thanks for any insight, Alan |

Use the rested number after the pack recovers from being discharged.
It's the same after charging, you need them to rest to get a true state of charge. |

Thanks, I was never quite sure of that from reading other threads. Sounds like in my example below I had some run time left to get to 50%.....

The reason I am asking this is I am trying to get a handle on how far my carts will go before hitting an SOC of 80%, 50%, etc. That cart I drove 31 mile in a previous post was my Dad's cart, not one of mine. We have two Club Cars which can share the load to extend battery life.
One has a pack that is 3 years old, 6 - 8 volt Trojan T875 batteries. It will go about 25 miles to get the pack to 48 volts. The second has 8 - 6 volt Trojan T105 batteries installed in March 2010. The other day as a test I went just over 50 miles and the voltage measured as soon as I stopped was 48.1. I did not watch to see how the voltage recovered. My gut feel is that batteries recover about .5 - .7 volts after resting an hour, so based on what I am reading a no load voltage of 47.8 measured as soon as load removed is about 50% SOC as it should recover to 48.4. |
