Default 2001 Club Car Charger Won't kick off

I have a 2001 Club. The batteries are new and were fully charged at dealer. The OBC is new along with the receptacle. When I first tried to charge the batteries the Powerdrive charger would shoot up to 20 amps and run for about 3 minutes and kick the breaker. I got another charger from a friend and the this did not occur. After two hours I hooked my charger back up and the breaker didn't kick. A full charge was completed with my charger as the breaker didn't kick at lower amps. I changed the breaker and hooked up the charger. It kicked on to 10 amps and shut off and then back to 10 amps charging. This was after the cart ran 18 holes. Ths was 3 pm. I returned at 9:30 am the next morning and the charger was still running but at 0 amps. This happened again the next day. I don't think the batteries are bad or the other charger wouldn't have worked. Any suggestions? Maybe the timer in the charger. All the batteries tested good at the dealer two weeks ago.

welcome, if they are brand new batteries its not uncommon for the cart to charge for up to 16 hours, new batteries are only about 75% and there is a proper break in procedure so as long as they are charging and charger isn,t getting hot and water isn,t gushing out of batteries don,t panic and it may stay close to 0 amps for quite some time before shutting off again normal......i,m breaking in a set myself right now and dealing with the same thing...............make sure the batteries are topped off with distilled water to 1/8 inch over lead plates and let the charger do its thing.......................

Is it okay if it runs for 20 hours or more? The batteries arent gushing water and weren't overly hot. I thought the charger would kick off after 16 hours. Is it normal for the charger only to go to 10 amps? it use to always go to 15 or more. The breaker I replaced is also a different shape than my old one. The guy said that is what club car replaced them with. It is the style that is on the newer chargers and my old one was the longer breaker. Is that correct

what name on charger? should shut off after 16 hours unless they bypassed the low voltage sensor than it won,t shut off at all and you,ll have to keep eyes on it......as for amps depending on how far you discharge batteries ........in this forum there is a link to charging batteries its a long read but more than worth it you,ll have to read thur some of the post to find it but again worth it.......very cart and set of batteries is going to be different but as long as nothing is getting hot and your not losing water all should be ok...............i,d be interested in if they did a bypass in your charger and why? they do that when cart has a bad OBC but you said yours is new..................................

Nothing has been messed with on the charger other than I changed the breaker. It is a Powerdrive charger. I never had any problems before with it kicking off. Would a timer or relay in the charger cause that. It kicked off prior to the breaker change. The breaker is a different style like on the new smaller chargers. Mine is a 2001 or 2002. It had the longer syle breaker that i see online but the one I was given as a replacement is the same style as the newer chargers. I don't know if it matters.

Also the battery indicator light in the dash has never worked that I can tell. It is yellow but I don't think that should cause a problem with the charger not kicking off.

no it shouldn,t but the charger should shut off after 16 hours thats how its designed and i don,t think the breaker is going to effect that at all......your charger worked before right?.........i,m not sure what to tell ya to do because what your decribing the charger now not shutting off is an indication of 2 things that i know of........1 being a bad OBC and you said yours is new ( unless its defective ) and thats possible and 2 the low voltage sensor in the charger being bad and you say no one has messed w2ith the charger........i know of no other reason that your charger wouldn,t shut off ...........even with bad batteries it would timev out and shut off.............so alright guys anyone have anything else i,m missing or am i wrong or what the battery light if it works or not wouldn,t effect any of this.........maybe someone else here can add to this but i,m kinda scratching my head right now............................

Remember I used someone else's charger with the current new OBC and all was well with the other guys charger. I don't think it would be the OBC but it would almost have to be something in the charger not kicking it off but I don't know much about the timers. I may just let it run for 24 hours and see if it eventually kicks off. According to how I remember it from Sunday afternoon to Monday morning it ran from 3 pm to about 9:30 and that is near 18 hours.

yes you did say that.....it could be a bad low voltage sensor i have nerver seen one go bad as theres no much to it but i imagine they can go bad......if it were mine i,d start there......open up the charger and clean the spade terminals maybe they arn,t making a good connection......i,m trying to imagine what all is in there since its been a while since i opened one.....................i have a few books here i,m gonna look to see if they show the charger innards it one of them.....you said the charger did work before? ...............................................

Yes, it did work except the breaker would kick at high amps. I installed a breaker and corrected that but now it doesnt go over 10 amps and won't kick off. What are the spade terminals?
