Default How do I remove brake drums?

88 Club Car DS. Would like to look at the brake shoes, but don't know how to get the drum off. I'm assuming the brake shoes are worn, because you have to stand on the brake before the car will eventually come to a stop.

Here is a link for normal removal process. Basically all years fall into this link.

Have you backed the adjustment off?

I did not back off the adjustment screw. But I did finally get the drum off!
I guess new brake shoes are in order, since it was that hard to get the drum off. I assume there's supposed to be some sort of padding on the outside of each shoe??? Mine just look like smooth metal with a lot of rust-colored dust.

The plum Quick forum post above has a following discussion that many CCers run into. The cart is jacked, wheels off, cable removed, adjustment screw backed off and drum pulled and brake shoe retaining clips pulled. The next step (even in the manual) is to simply tilt the shoes outward and remove them. The problem is the hub is in the way. The CC manual shows the first half of the procedure with the hub/axle in place and the second half of the procedure with the hub/axle removed but never mentions removing it. The PQ forum discusses pulling the retaining clip and then the the axle. Is there an easier way to do it with the axle in place?

If you have run the shoes down to metal you may need drums and shoes ....

Ok, I backed off the adjustment screw, and the drums were really easy to put back on. I guess I didn't understand how the adjustment screw tightened up the shoes until now. I'm not so sure I need new brake shoes. If they were worn down to metal, wouldn't I hear a loud screeching sound when braking? Is there a way to adjust the sensitivity of the brake pedal? Maybe I'll figure out how to post a picture on this forum and you guys can see the condition of the shoes...
