CC DS brake help
87 club car ds has brake dragging on drivers side. I pulled the drum and pads look good. I discovered the adjustment bolt found behind the brakes on the top of the assembly. I am guessing this is a 7mm square bolt. Almost all of the threads are exposed. The rubber boot was missing so it has been exposed to the elements. More importantly, it has been exposed to the improper hand tools of the previous owner. I cannot get the screw to move in or out.
I have tried to soak it with WD-40, vice grips, and 7mm wrenches, plus adjustable crescent wrench. No Joy! Any advice? I need to get the cart back together asap. Thanks |

Re: CC DS brake help
Wd40 is a good fine short lasting lubricant. It is not a rust dissolver like 'liquid wrench'. So I'm guessing you are up against some rust? Get a rust buster.
And I use a 10" metric crescent wrench on those little boogers But in the SW we rarely find those adjusters rusted up.. but without the boot, anything can happen. |

Re: CC DS brake help
I have found that heat some times will loosen the rust enough to free the adjuster. A small propane torch is what I used with good success. I also always use a brass rod and hammer that will break rust enough to allow it to turn most of the time without damage.

Re: CC DS brake help
Old MEC, can you please explain how you use the brass rod and hammer with greater detail?
The square head on this cart is already chewed up. I don't know that a wrench will ever do much good unless I can really get it broken free first. |

Re: CC DS brake help
just take a hammer and tap the adjuster like you are trying to drive a nail into the back side of the brake backing plate... just tap tap tap, remember you are pounding on threads The knurled up end can be cleaned up with a file so a large crescent wrench can be snugged down on it again. Just file two opposite sides flat and parallel.
