well its the transformer thats buzzing loudly

are there any schematics available for the lester charger?
what is the metal plate that attaches to the top of the transformer?

i touched it with my pliers and arc'd my pliers to it...... i managed to get them off....

the chargers internal wires are all stiff and the insulation is brittle.
kind of discouraging.....

i could make a better one from scratch, and save myself 500 of the 600 bucks.
has anyone tried this before?

instead of posting a new answer for me a link to an existing topic would be appreciated. i am still learning the terms used in the golfcart world so it is difficult to locate info, yet i am sure its already there.....

500-600 bucks??? holy cow, you could buy a new charger for about half that...... and get one that uses solid state tech instead of a transformer.......

don't know what else the pliers were touching when you touched them to the top of the transformer, but that shouldn't be happening at all....it's normal for the wires from the transformer to be stiff with brittle insulation... 20 years of heating up will do that to them.

I saw the need for these extremely technical guys too, Tom. It was on the Buggies Unlimited Forum or the *********** Forum, or the Plum Quick forum? One of those other sites.... I can't remember which one, probably all of the above and then some of the highly technical engineering discussion forums about how to invent stuff that has already been in use for 20 years.

there`s a metal plate that is attached to a bracket at the top of the transformer. this metal plate APPEARS to be a remote heatsink for 2 small round components that press into the plate.

one of the components didnt look fully seated so i pushed on it with my pliers and the arc went, yet i didnt get zapped so i assume it arc`d back to the little component itself, which is the size of a dime.

i would definately want a solidstate charger, even a used one and it can be as little as 10A ... my 25A lester runs at 12A if the gauge is correct. i fear its very power hungry and not very efficient as it throws alot of heat .....
