Default Bad Batteries?

Hey everyone, newb here so please don't flame me if I sound ignorant, trying to learn a little here.

Situation: 08 Club Car DS 4-12v batteries. We just bought the cart Saturday and it was pretty dead when we bought it. Brought it home and plugged it in, about 4 hours later two batteries started to boil over so I shut it down. I tested the voltage on each battery and they read #1-12.1v, #2-12.1v, #3-12.1v, #4-12.0v. now according to the chart that means they have a 50% charge. So last night I put it back on the charger to see what happens and after about 4 hours they start to boil again so I shut it down. Tested voltage this morning and #1-12.3v, #2-12.3v, #3-12.3v, #4-12.2v. From everything I can determine, the batteries are good but maybe the dealer i got it from overfilled the batteries on a low charge and that's why they are boiling over? They are the original 08 Club car batteries and #4 is really swelled. Dealer said he'd work with me and ship me some new Trojans for half price which will be around 300.

Any thoughts or comments would be great. Thanks guys.

Greg

If you have the $300 to spend it would be a good time to spend it.

I haven't checked the cells because I don't have a hydrometer but the dealer stated the batteries were load tested and passed. Is there a real difference between the 4-12's and the 6-8's? What kind of difference? Anything special I'll need to do?

Thanks guys. I'll see if the dealer will work with me on the 6-8's and a conversion kit otherwise I'll just have him ship me the new 12's.
