Default Stereo In Club Car

Well everyone first let me say I love these forums. I am a brand new Cart owner and have what looks to be a 1998 Electric Club Car in 48v configuration. I am currently having a charger installed, I think it is a DQ or something like that (yes I am that new). To my question....The cart has a stereo installed and it plays well from the short time that I turned it on. However, it appears to be connected directly to one of the 6 batteries. I was told that I should get a 48V/12V converter and that it would save my battery life and allow me to get full power to the cart motor vs allowing the stereo to draw on the batteries. So my question is 1) Do I really need this inverter, 2) if I do, where do I get one, 3) how hard is it to install?

On another note, in the deal I also got an older western cart. Does anyone know of a rear seat kit for the western cart?

Hey and welcome to BGW. It's a voltage reducer and I just installed one last summer for the same...running accessories like stereo, head & tail lights etc. I'm not sure about your year but my cart had the holes already drilled in the chasis and i bet yours does as well. Make sure you get a minimum of 15 amps, I put in a 25amp. Easy enough to install and wire up. You can google "Club Car Voltage Reducer" that way you can shop around on the price.

Thank you for the response. I am seeing multiple people saying to run a seperate 12V battery for the stereo. Is this a better way to go? I have a Wheel Chair battery that is small and sealed but holds a long charge.

Thanks

I've got an ezgo also and i thought on that cart i would also just add a battery as these guys have sugggested, especially for the radio. In some of the previous threads these guys have suggested adding that additional battery because the radio would either cut out or shut off (occassionally) when it was ran through the pack. The ezgo has an extra place for an additional battery in the battery compartment...cool

I use a similar 12 volt battery from my electric handicap scooter and it does a great job and in my case only needs charging 2 times a month. I mounted mine over front suspension with solenoid connected to key switch.

thank you all for the responses. I have finally decided upon a solution. I bought a 12v chair battery today and will install it in the cart. I cant put it under the seat with the other batteries as I put in the Q charger. I will probably mount it over the front suspension and then run a set of wires for charging out the glove box and just plug it in similar to what I use on my Harley. Thank you all again for your support. Oh, I did get new batteries for the cart today so I am looking forward to installing them tonight and letting the cart charge and then taking it for a nice cruise tomorrow.
Thanks again.

If you don't mind me asking, where did you get the chair battery? I found one at Sears, but haven't been able to find one anywhere else. Also does anyone know if these wheelchair battery do as well as a normal marine style battery? Thanks.

Either will do the job. I bought a reducer and then decided not to use it because my kids use the cart and would more than likely, sooner or later, forget to switch it off. And my luck would be that something would be on fire at some point. This week, I wired up a dedicated 12v battery. My rear seat has 2 supports that run down and bolt to the bottom of the bag well area, so that was wasted space for me - but it holds a type 24 battery and battery box perfectly (had to remove and replace one of the supports to get it in there and will have to again to service the battery). Since I had the space, I went ahead and got a marine deep cycle battery with 105 amp hour rating so I am hoping to get good runtimes from it. For now, I left the bolt-on connector to my battery tender on the battery so I can just plug in and charge away with not much effort, but I suspect I'm going to end up needing a charger that pushes a bit more amperage to get the battery to charge back up in the time I'll want it to happen in (overnight). Taking it back to the lake (campground) for 9 days starting tomorrow, so we'll see what happens. By the way, I'm running my lights off the dedicated battery as well as the stereo. So no extra loads on my battery pack, other than the cart itself, at all.

I got it at the Battery Supply Warehouse on long beach blvd in Long Beach. They have several types and sizes depending how much you want to spend. Mine was about 140 and the size of a large MC battery.
