Another battery problem

I bought a 2001 DS CC about 8 months ago and replaced all the batteries i have 6- 8 Volt batteries. It came with a powerdrive charger and when i first purchased the batteries (which are Crown btw) It would charge as expected but the orange light would blink on and off randomly... Didnt know much about it then to count the seconds between flashes. Well about a month ago my daughter was riding it while I was out of town on business and she said it started shaking. I told her to plug it in and let it charge overnight. She then said it wouldnt move. Last night I check the voltage across the entire pack and I am getting 39 volts Each battery is down to 7 volts except for two... One is at 4 volts and one is at 6 volts.. My question is.. I pretty much have been breaking in the batteries per the sticky (Until the daughter drove it).. Now my charger will click hum for a second then shut off. I did the bypass with the grey wire to the ground and the charger would click on and hum but stay at maybe 1 amp. I checked the water and they all have plenty of water.

Can I charge a single battery with my 6v or 12v charger? i have the option of 2a, 4a, or 6a charge with the single charger... Is there even saving the batteries that are at 4V or 6V?

Yes you can charge with an auto charger get them charged before there is any damage. Use 12 volts charge for 2 to 4 hours each. What I would do is bypass the relay inside the charger, and read voltage on the dc plug while it's not plugged into the cart. You will probably find the voltage low if so unplug the charger from the wall and do it forward and reverse ohms check of the two diodes.

if they are crown and they are under 1 year old is there any warranty? if so i would at least have them checked and tested to make certain you have a battery problem........at this point you need to find out if the problem is with the batteries or the cart..............................have the batteries tested, load tested ect............................................

Yea the batteries have a 2 year warranty from the place i bought them from I just didnt want to take them up there and they throw a charge on it and then look at me like I am stupid for not doing it myself.

I remember seeing a thread about bypassing the relay but I cant seem to find it now?

I think your looking at one of two problems
1 diodes
2 OBC

maybe both if the Obc doesn't like AC

I know all I do is cut and paste !! (BUT I'M GOOD AT IT)

Thank you, Ill check out the charger when i get home. Im sure its the OBC since it costs the most money. Even when I bypass the OBC with the Grey wire off The recepticle how many amps will the charger provide while bypassed?

This type of batteries charge @ 2.25 to 2.45 volts per cell
so on a 48 volt system thats 24 cells X 2.25 to 2.45 = 54 to 58 volts, now with it not plugged into anything it could be quite a bit higher but this would be MIN. or low end.

The grey wire test is usually for a charger that will not kick on!! yours is kicking on the OBC is still controlling the charge by controlling the Black Wire.

The OBC has control of a number of functions
1 does not let cart move if charger is plugged in
2 turns on charger
3 controls rate of charge (black wire)
4 I think there is one more, I just can't pull it out right now

Gotcha.. So there isnt any other way to bypass the OBC to manually charge the batteries other than bypassing the relay on the charger?

Is this the one more thing you were trying to remember?

5. Monitors and keeps track of BEU's used from the battery pack. (Battery Energy Units) It does this to help with proper rotation of a fleet of golf carts at a golf course. The number of BEU's used can be read wirelessly through the dash light using a special reader.

Is it possible to try that charger on another cart so you know where to consentrate your efforts?
