Bounce/wobble in rear end
I have a 98 DS and at higher speeds the drivers side rear tire is bouncing. I put it on jack stands and ran it quick to confirm it. It starts out ok but then at tope speed it bounces the whole cart. I tried a stock tire since the tires on it are 23". It still does it although not quite as bad.
What in the rear end could be causing it? The axle, bearings? I saw a thread on this similar issue last year but didn't see a resolution. Thanks, Doug |

Re: Bounce/wobble in rear end
The first thing you have to do is find out if it is a bad wheel or tire. Take a whell and tire from the other side and put it on the side thats shaking. See if it's still shaking. If it's still shaking it may be a bad axle or wheel bearing. If it runs true it could be a bent wheel. If you thing the whell is bent mark the tire at the valve stem with chalk. Let the air out of the tire and try spinning the tire on the rim so the mark is opposite the valve stem. Inflate the tire and see if it runs better. You could have an out of round tire.

Re: Bounce/wobble in rear end
I did try a different wheel/tire (in my original post) but it still does it.
Thanks, Doug |

Re: Bounce/wobble in rear end
Hey neighbor! Did you ever figure out what was causing the bounce? My 87 DS is doing the same thing, even after putting on new wheels and tires. I'm suspecting an axle bearing. Where are you in PTC?

Re: Bounce/wobble in rear end
The issue with mine was the tires. They were 22" tires on 12 inch rims but the tire shop said they couldn't balance them. I tried different tires and it no longer bounced.
I am over in Wilkemoore Village near the Wal-mart. |

Re: Bounce/wobble in rear end
Cool. I'm over near the Glenloch Rec Center. I got my new wheels and tires online, they're just the standard white 8" steelies with a knobby "traction" tire. I spun the RR wheel by hand and it looks to me like the tire isn't exactly round, which may be one thing, but the bouncing is accompanied by a scraping/rubbing noise from the axle area, it sounds like brake shoes rubbing against a severely warped drum. I put on new drums and it made the scraping worse. I'm thinking now I may potentially have a bent axle, and that is what is causing the tire to appear out of round. I would like to think that if the tires are out of round that they will eventually fix themselves, especially when it warms up. Anyone have any other ideas?
