Default Club car 96 battery charger not turning off

I have a 1996 Power Drive Plus DS Electric Club Car 48 volt with an On- Board Computer. Last summer i could play 5 holes of golf and it would quit. i replaced the Controller and solved that problem. then this summer the charger would not engage so i read your articles and temporarily by passed the on board computer and jumped the charger to get the batteries to charge.
When the meter read 5 amps for two hours i disconned the charger. i did this for 4 charges only until i was able to replace the on board computer.
with the installation of the on board computer i removed the jumper from the charger and now when i competed my first charge with the new on board computer, the charger comes on and charges until the meter reads 2 amps, but does not shut off.
i checked the batteries which are only 2 years old and after charging and they read as follows.
8.37
8.35
8.43
8.35
8.35
8.43
I have not done a specific gravity test of the cells, but based on the charged readings it appears the batteries are fully charged. what can i do to get the charger to turn off. does it need to cycle a few times before the batteries are "balanced". Any help would be much appreciated.
thank you

how long did you leave it on? the last phase of the charge cycle (the 2 amp phase) is when the balancing occurs. from the numbers you posted, you batteries are not 100% charged. the OBC is supposed to shutoff the charger at or before 16 hours. if it goes longer than that, you likely have a problem. a few charge/discharge cycles for the OBC to calibrate is totally normal.

yep sonicj is correct it may stay at 2 amps for hours but you need to leave it go.........it will shut off at 16 hours if your charger is working right...........if it does time out at 16 hours unplug wait a minute and start charging again......you,ll not hurt anything and chances are it will shut off normal the 2nd time.........this could all be from the way you were charging it before you replaced OBC .................................................8 )

how old are the batteries? whay year cart do you have ?? if all is working ok the charger may run up to 16 hours so 1st thing you need to do is let it stay on that long it should shut off at 16 hours wether batteries are charged or not.......i have a digital gage on my cart at home and while the batteries are a year old this is maybe the 8th time i,m charging them and they get over 61 volts at times with charger on but you need to see if charger is shutting off at 16 hours or not, all things concidered depending on year one of the ways OBC goes bad is it will notturn charger off and you end up burning up good batteries way before their time..............................................

My cart is a 2001 club car ds i have only tried to charge it 2 times it responds real well in about 8 hrs down to 5 amps another 2 hours down to 2 amps a remains at 2 amps. all batteries are at 8.5 off charge i just noticed my horn button is not working can there be a short or a fuse cause the batteries to draw a small load of 2 amps to interept the charger from shutting down or do you think its a obc problem. Charger comes right on also had charger hooked up to another cart worked fine shut off automatically

The 2amp charge is normal at the end of a charge cycle to equalize the battery pack. Does the charger shut off eventually? A far as the horn, there could be a blown fuse, shorted wire or bad switch.

i was afraid to leave it on longer than 18 hours i am a firefighter was concerned about catching fire. The batteries are quite new only two months old. My brother took the cart and ran it very low batteries went down to 7,9 after he used it. they are at 8.5 now pack is holding at 51.3 and all cells hydro tested well. My friend stated if charger remains at 2 amps maybe something electrical on the cart is on and drawing 2 amps how do i test the batteru pack to see if there is something drawing a load. Also i should probably try to chaRGE AGAIN AND LEAVE IT AT 2 AMPS FOR SEVERAL HOURS TO SEEE IF IT FINALLY SHUTS OFF THANKS SOOOO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP
