Need Help with a broken lug stuck to the lugnut......
I was pulling my wheels to change the tires(98 DS) and one of the lugs was a little more difficult to turn. After a minimal twist, it started spinning freely so it looks like the teeth that hold the lug to the axle are stripped and the lug nut is stuck on the threads. So, Do I have any options other than braking the lug off?? I hate to have to do that but since the other side is apart, It doesnt look like I have an option other than cracking the rear rnd apart.......
If I have to break the lug, what is the safest way to do it since I have never had to do it before...... TIA........ |

Use the search engine here . . . someone recently had that same issue and posted their "attack plan" . . .

I got it off thanks to a drill and air chisel..........Does anyone know if the hole on the axle plate is supposed to be smooth like in the pic below, or is it supposed to be splined like the stud???

Thanks. I will work on finding a replacement stud. That was tough but it could have been a lot worse

I tack welded my studs on the inside of the drum. Hopefully I won't have that problem. Nice job.

Yes, looks as if you got off easy... I have spent an afternoon chasing one of those nuts off the stud without wrecking the wheel... it's worse with fancy wheels... I keep a 1/2 by 20 tap handy to chase the threads on anything that seems the least bit buggered, for prevention.

Re: Need Help with a broken lug stuck to the lugnut......
The hole in plate may be oversized now . . . the stud should have a slight interference fit going thru the hole so the spline on the stud has something to bite into to secure it . . . it may be smooth now from the stud spinning in the hole . . . may need to tack weld if stud is loose in hole now . . . stud may also be worn at spline from spinning . . . new stud may be required if welding not an option . .
