Causes for Solenoid to go "bad"?

New poster here and this site has helped bunches.

I have a 1994 Club Car with the single solenoid. Purchased it from a friend about three months ago and after I replaced the batteries it ran fantastic.

After a few times of hesitating to move in any direction it finally would not go at all.

It has new Trojan batteries and they are well charged. All the wiring is in good shape and properly connected.

Using data gleaned from this site I jumped the solenoid and can get the car to go.

Now, my question is what are some reasons that a solenoid will go bad?

Is there any special pain I should take to charge it, ie, making sure switch is not on or having it in a run position?

Will leaving the switch on run the batteries down?

Any ideas would help in the future.

Your solenoid is not necessarily bad. There are some micro switches in the circuit that activates it. Look through the stickies at the top of the page and they will help you trace your circuits for testing, and if more help is needed you will certainly find it here!

welcome to BGW, soleniods go bad for many reasons......it could be as simple as how some 8 year old put it togather, heat, corrision, age, just to name a few but theres no real certainty on how or why or when.............my best advice is whjen you buy your parts try and find OEM parts cause when you start trying to save a buck thats when you run into trouble......if you see a soleniod for 20 bucks but every other place that sells it is asking 50 bucks that should throw up a red flag for you..............................
