Default Working on Cart

Being new I read a lot of post.I have a Club Car Precedent and want to change the cables and make a few other changes. But reading in the forum you can fry a controller easy. Can you install a fuse going to the controller to protect it? If so where would you put it. Also I will be storing the cart this winter for at lease two months. I was thinking about disconnecting the batteries and installing a battery tender on each of the batteries. We loose power several times a month and I don't want to leave the cart on the regulator charger.
Thanks

as far as a fuse for controller when you buy an aftermarket controller they give you a fuse to install and they reccomend either right on the controller ( not sure off top of my head where ) or on the #1 battery pos. terminal......i beleive thats with alltrax controllers.......most carts with OEM controllers there there isn,t a fuse...........as for storing cart if you have good fully charged batteries that hold a charge you really don,t even need a battery tender if its just a few months............just disconnect main pos. and neg. cables and tape ends up so they can,t short against anything...........i leave several carts sit for 4 to 5 months outside just like the one in my avatar they sit outside all winter and with good batteries after i do a fast look over i hook cables back up and have no issues.....but your problem with a battery tender is if they are 6 or 8 volt batteries the tender won,t work......................

How easy or how can this be avoided?

Carts are all new to me and what should I do to avoid this? Also, is there a place I can install a fuse? I'm getting the cart today and it's all stock other then the speed was changed. I just want to know what precaution to take to avoid this.

If it has a TOW/RUN switch under the seat, ALWAYS put it into TOW mode when working on car . . .

Thanks Steve. It does have this switch. Does this disconnect the batteries from the electronics?

Correct . . except for OBC controlling rate of charge if connected to a charger when in TOW mode . . putting vehicle in TOW mode is a good habit to get into whenever you even think of messing with batteries/wiring/etc . .

The fuse installed in the controller to battery main cable as recommended by alltrax wont help keep you from frying the controller. It will help prevent a fire or melted components. The Run/Tow MUST be in TOW position before touching any thing under the seat.

Thank you gentleman. I will take your advice and should I also just leave it in "tow" when I am not using the cart as well
