85 Club Car - Variant Speed

Howdy Folks...Joined today and have spent all day reading. Thanks in advance for all your knowledge. MY old 85 CC has been a work horse for me and served me well. I have read and understand about the 5 solenoids and switches.
My issue is a little different and before I start breaking rusty nuts and bolts and spending money I don't have in the wrong places I am going to ask for your direction.
The issue is sometimes when I go to reverse it will barely roll and sometimes works fine. Sometimes if I go to forward then back to reverse it will work. The other issue is that in forward a lot of the time the power surges or really slows down. If I pump the foot pedal sometimes it will improve.

I do have a volt meter and a jack and plan on doing some testing as soon as I can get a foot-feed person around. In the mean time if any one has a target area on an issue like this Iwould greatly appreciate the info.
