Solenoid, speed switch assembly?
I have an older model 36 volt Club Car. When I touch the accelerator pedal the cart takes off full blast. The tires chirp and the front wheels come of the ground. I am wondering if it is the high speed solenoid, the speed switch assembly or maybe something else.

The high speed solenoid is just an urban myth A stock controller will never lift the front wheels so I'm going to venture a guess, you have an aftermarket control which is improperly matched to your throttle sending unit.
We need more info. |

From the serial number, the cart looks to be a 1983. Before I bought it, the guy put in new batteries but it does not look like he replaced the speed switch. The cart was doing fine for them and for us for 2-3 weeks and suddenly started doing this. I put a continuity tester on each of the solenoids and 4 of the 5 seem to be open and 1 shows that it is closed.

That is the problem, solenoids can fail welded closed. The solenoid closest to the driver's side is the master. It always opens first, sending power to one side of all the other solenoids. As the peddle is pressed micro switches in the Peddle box trigger the closing of each solenoid in progression for faster speeds. Obviously you have a high speed solenoid welded shut or triggered on constantly.
Disregard my earlier post I was not thinking 5 solenoid speed system. |

It sounds like you have the last solenoid ( on passenger side ) has a stuck closed internal contacts? This solenoid bypasses the large coil resistors and feed full power to motor. To confirm that the ( CLOSED SOLENOID ) is stuck remove the negative cable to your battery pack and if the solenoid OPENS its a wiring problem, if remains closed replace with new soenoid.

Thank you for replying so fast. This is my 1st cart and my 1st time in a forum, so sorry if I sound like I don't know what I am doing. I will remove the ground and recheck the solenoid. It is the one farthest to the passenger side. Hopefully it is not a wiring issue.
Another quick question. How tight should the wires be on the f/r switch? |

Is that a trick question? The 2 on the small side terminals swivel. Those 10mm bolts should have no more than 10 ft pounds on them.

No trick, they just seemed loose. I didn't want to over tighten them.

Electrical connections just need to be snug tight ... the everyday heat from amperage flow and cooling at night will loosen the connections over time, but over tightening is not a solution. They should be rechecked periodically

I still have the problem I started with. The cart takes of full blast as soon as I touch the pedal. I have replaced the high speed solenoid that showed to be closed. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.
This is on a 1983 Club Car 36v. |
