Battery Storage?

I have a tractor lead-acid battery that is brand new and never used. We bought a new riding mower and when the battery came with no charge the dealer left me with another. Anyway the first one I put on a charger and is fine now.

The question is how long an unused battery will last? Riding mower batteries seem to last me about 2 years before they need replacement. I'm wondering if the unused one will be able to charge and be of use in about 2 yrs? Thanks!

Can I ask what brand of batteries you're using?

My tractor (John Deere) is going on year 10 with the OEM battery.

I have had bad luck with powersports equipment batteries (motorcycles, Jet-Skis) from WallOfChinaMart. Like you say, they last from 1 to 2 seasons at best.

I switched to Deka's 4 years ago, and haven't had one go bad yet....

Oh, and yes, if you occasionally trickle charge that extra battery, it'll probably be useable in 2 years...

Hi delagem, It is a John Deere battery. I was wondering about giving it to someone down the street or keeping it if it would stay good. It can be stored in the garage or shed and be useable in a few years. Trickle charge it occassionaly. Does that sound about right

Yes, that sounds about right.

But have you had this short of a life with an OEM Deere battery before?

I'm thinking you'll find much better than 2 year life with the battery that came in your tractor, but much less if you were to put a poor quality discount store battery in there instead....

my dad's kubota has a Deka thats probably around 5 years old. he has never charged it and it sometimes goes months between uses.

look for a float voltage printed on the battery. if there isn't one, look here. if the voltage is matched precisely, you can leave a float charger on 24/7.

my tractor battery was 14 years old when i replaced it last year it was a die-hard ...........not my 1st choice of batteries but thats what it came with.....15 years and i,m still on the 1st spark plug and tractor runs like new.......................
