10W30 Mobil 1 in the differential

I had some left-over 10W30 Mobil 1 synthetic oil from an oil change I did on my car. I figured, why waste it, so I changed my gear oil and added that. Does anybody have a negative opinion on what I did? I know the manual says to use 30W

I'm sorry about bringing up this topic, but the last disscussion had no mention of 10W30, just 90W, 30W and cooking oil

GEEZ Bruce....

10W30 will be fine for now, I ran it in my 96 DS 48V trans for 2 years, with no problems,
I'm pretty stuck on doing what the manual says... but, I have strayed at times!

I did the same with 10W-40 synthetic. I read that the oil reaches the upper range of the weight at 100 degrees. I live in FL too, it's already 80 degrees most of the time, I figure the temp raises pretty quick.

Thanks Bruce , Yeah, I know, but this must be a common question and someone else may like the info. Seriously, thanks for the input guys. I'm pretty OCD, so next time I'm in wally world I'll snag some 30W Mobil 1

Good luck in finding straight 30wt in a synthetic in a store. If you do post it here I'd also check online for 30wt Royal Purple... I did find that on Amazon

I just bought a quart of 30W Royal Purple at my local auto parts store in Houston. Royal Purple is based here so it is probably more available here than elsewhere. I did have to ask for it, they did not have it on the counter. I didnt see any speed increase but it needed to be changed!

Hey Scuba,

I didn't think about that I only use synthetic oils whenever possible. I might just leave the 10W30 in there, unless I find something else. The way I look at it, the engineers want you to use a product good for all temps. Here in FLA, it's hot, and I bet you could use an even higher then 30W viscosity oil.

However, if I find straight 30W synthetic, I'll let you know

I had to get mine from Amazon as well. I looked and looked for 30W RP (and asked) but nobody carried it. I did buy a few qts to get the free supersaver shipping.
