Default Terminal Stress Mark

I have the original 05 (4)12v batteries and are the black Trojan t-1275's. I just noticed that all 4 of my positive battery posts are stressed on the side where the date is imprinted on the flat round lead spot. They are bulged and show white stress marks just like when you bend plastic back and forth. I will be replacing the batteries in the spring as I just stored my cart today. I just want to know if I should be concerned and if this is a hazard while stored?

I didn't take a pic of mine but here is scubabud's pic of his to show the area I'm talking about.

You mean to tell me your cart still works with 6+ year old 12 volt batteries? That is shocking! I'd be stressed too! What brand are you gonna go with?

And still has a 51v relaxed reading But it's time and they will be replaced with US batteries

I'm hoping some one can put me at ease with my findings above

If it's not leaking, I wouldn't worry about it. Just don't let 'em freeze. Are the marks on all the batts or just some? Could be stress from cables pulled too tight?

Scratch all that! Scotty answered it for ya and he should know!

Yes it is all 4 batteries and just the pos terminals. Scotty, you said "Normal" but can you explain as to why just the pos terminals do this? Do they eventually crack open? I'm sure age of the batteries have contributed to this, correct? I'm learning and appreciate your knowledge

I wouldn't worry about it too much. Those batts lasted beyond the intended service life anyway. You should be glad they still work as old as they are. Mine were OEM Trojans from late '06 and 3/4 were still working when I replaced them. When I find a good product, I stay loyal until I get burned, then I move on.

Note: I had no stress marks on mine, just some minor bulging on the sides.

Mine have some bulging on the sides as well. I am just curious as to what causes the stress on the pos terminals and not the neg. I like to know the cause behind it so I am better knowledge.

I may not be totally correct on this, but the internal connection for the positive post is right beneath the housing, while the negative is a few millimeters away. Since these connections run warm ( hopefully ), over a period of time the + terminal will craze the case. I can't see how this could hurt anything, it's just like getting gray hair!

The bulging is pretty much for the same reasons. Repeated heating and cooling and sometimes way overtightened hold downs! The bulging doesn't seem to affect performance, unless extreme.

The battery cases are a pretty thin plastic and when you charge your batteries they get warm and pressure actually builds up in them when they gas. It's not much ( the tops do not freely breath ), but over many cycles of this, the sides of the batteries will bow out.
