Terminal Stress Mark
I have the original 05 (4)12v batteries and are the black Trojan t-1275's. I just noticed that all 4 of my positive battery posts are stressed on the side where the date is imprinted on the flat round lead spot. They are bulged and show white stress marks just like when you bend plastic back and forth. I will be replacing the batteries in the spring as I just stored my cart today. I just want to know if I should be concerned and if this is a hazard while stored?
I didn't take a pic of mine but here is scubabud's pic of his to show the area I'm talking about. DSCN0875.jpg |

Re: Terminal Stress Mark
If it's not leaking, I wouldn't worry about it. Just don't let 'em freeze. Are the marks on all the batts or just some? Could be stress from cables pulled too tight?
Scratch all that! Scotty answered it for ya and he should know! Last edited by Stevec3201; 10-30-2011 at 12:33 PM.. Reason: because |

Re: Terminal Stress Mark
Yes it is all 4 batteries and just the pos terminals. Scotty, you said "Normal" but can you explain as to why just the pos terminals do this? Do they eventually crack open? I'm sure age of the batteries have contributed to this, correct? I'm learning and appreciate your knowledge

Re: Terminal Stress Mark
I wouldn't worry about it too much. Those batts lasted beyond the intended service life anyway. You should be glad they still work as old as they are. Mine were OEM Trojans from late '06 and 3/4 were still working when I replaced them. When I find a good product, I stay loyal until I get burned, then I move on.
Note: I had no stress marks on mine, just some minor bulging on the sides. |

The bulging is pretty much for the same reasons. Repeated heating and cooling and sometimes way overtightened hold downs! The bulging doesn't seem to affect performance, unless extreme. The battery cases are a pretty thin plastic and when you charge your batteries they get warm and pressure actually builds up in them when they gas. It's not much ( the tops do not freely breath ), but over many cycles of this, the sides of the batteries will bow out. |
