Why not just swap a 48v motor for a 36v on my Precedent?
Time to gain some speed and torque now and I'm a little confused with all the different types of carts, systems, ways of gaining performance.
06 CC Precedent with all stock electrical, 6" All Sports lift, 23's, lots of steep hills and lots of passengers on back. I can get close to 23mph but the hills knock me down to 7-10mph!!! Already had the speed upgrade set to 4 but that was just a tease... I'm trying to keep this upgrade under $500 and need your advice. Should I swap my stock motor out and drop a 36v motor in with my stock controller? Or would I see more gains just swapping the controller with an Alltrax 400amp controller or 500 amp controller? I'd like to do the motor eventually too but like I said, money matters here. I do still have stock wires so that's a given in this. It's time for the wires for sure. So assuming I am including the wires upgrade what should I do to get this cart doing at least 25-28mph and pulling the hills without putting a frown on our faces? ha ha |

why not look into a pq motor about 300 bucks...........thats not gonna get you to 30 for that your gonna have to do motor, cables and something other than stock controller................................

For less than a gilberts 500a GE control you can have a 500a programmable Alltrax controller, HD 200/800 amp solenoid, Resistor & Diode from Carts Unlimited

why don't we break down your options. what you have : 1...... 23" wheels gave you a higher speed but you lost torque 2.......speed code 4 higher speed but a waste of money cause a programmable alltrex controller will let YOU PROGRAM AS YOU LIKE 3...... stock wires and controller tend to STARVE the motor. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx options new motor........... new controller ..........new wires why not just bite the bullet and wait till you have the money for the new controller and solonoid as scotty suggested. you will get an increase in speed along with a TREMENDOUS increase in torque. ( i actually had to slow my acceleration rate as the wife was complaining and i threw rocks with my wheels as they spun out. ) later you can consider a new motor which may or may not be necessary. but now you must also consider upgrading breaks if you want to go 30mph. and if money is a consideration...give your wife the option hang out at a bar and pick up woman or stay home and have a good cart hobby :)))))))))))) |

What a great group on here. Thanks for all the feedback including the sarcasm. I kinda winced when I saw my own quote spliced together showing how silly that sounded. But the truth here is my options are pretty clear and short of just dropping a grand on controller, motor and Scottyb's awesome wires I have to make a decision. ForBruce said it real well. And that's kind of how I was thinking but I just haven't been into this hobby too long. About a year now I guess. And I don't want to buy a controller, for example that ends up being replaced for another one when I buy a motor. Like I did on the CC speed adjustment. That $100 was a waste at this point. That's why I'm trying to get this right. So, with all that out there, the controller and wires are stage 1. QUESTION: a 400amp Alltrax sounds like a nice upgrade with a bit of speed maybe and certainly a big helping of torque. But if I decide to push for that 30mph next, will I regret the 400 and wish I'd have gotten the 500amp when I change motors? I can probably answer that myself, PROBABLY! ANOTHER QUESTION: Is there any reason I can't just get the 500amp controller? Will it be too much for my puny little stock motor? Or, because it's tuneable can I dial it back to getting all I can out of the stock motor without frying it? If that's the case, sounds like that's the move to make right now. THIRD QUESTION: IF I am on track here and get the 500amp from Scottyb (you Scottyb- I realize your on here and appreciate your input) what guage wire set is needed to do it right? I believe 2 guage would be what is recommended. Oh ya, back to that other question in my title... can I swap out my 48v stock motor for a 36v and get similar gains in torque and speed or is that a cheap shortcut that doesn't satisfy most in the long run? I have a brand new Alltrax dcx500, a 400amp solenoid with resistor and diode, and 2 gauge high thread count welding wires that I installed into a club car about three weeks ago. I sold the cart and they didn't want the upgrades, so I just pulled them out. I'll take just $525 for all of them. All you will need is the D&D motor 502:2 (170-502-0002) and you will be able to climb mountains! I can send pics.

Thanks TDAWG. That settles that.
As far as the 500 amp controller offered here, Cfeuerhahn, I'd want to buy one that has a warranty and support like through Scottyb where I can get help installing if I run into a problem. Thanks though. |
