Default battery break in clarification

For the second time this week, I am starting a thread which has been started many times and I apologize. I have read through many of those threads, but I still am left wondering the exact discharge recommendation during the battery break in period and I only get one chance with my new pack.

I have read a couple of versions for battery break in on this site alone. Both state I need to fully charge before first use and each use thereafter.

Scottyb's procedure states after charging I should take the cart down to 75% SOC. The sticky "Battery Guide" in the CC section of this site says to take it to 50% SOC.

It was always my impression during break in we wanted shallow discharges. Am I off with my understanding?

In Scottyb’s recommendation is it saying to not discharge the cart below 75%, e.g., 80-85% or is it saying I should be discharging to at least 75%, e.g., 65 - 70% for the first 15 - 20 cycles?

The 50% discharge in the battery guide seems very high to my untrained eye, comments?

Thanks
Alan

For the first 10-20 charge cycles you do not want to discharge the batteries more then 75% of their capacity. Another words, don't go below 12.4v per battery or a total pack charge of 49.6v.

I took my new batts down to 49.5-49.9 for the 1st 12 charges. The batteries work perfect today and never need equalizing. They also charge up very fast and rarely take over 5 hours to complete. My morning pack voltage is ~50.9-51.00 volts. (4 12v Trojans)

Thanks for the feedback on proper break in.....

It is interesting that the battery guide sticky on this site in the Club Car forum says to discharge to 50% during break in .

The new batteries have arrived and are installed. I am making the assumption that what I am seeing is normal, but I figure why not ask some experts...

Here is the pack upon arrival. As expected a bit low...so I charged.

Code:
Pack 49.0 (60%)
Battery 1 8.26 (70%)
Battery 2 8.25 (70%)
Battery 3 8.24 (70%)
Battery 4 8.07 (50%)
Battery 5 8.18 (60%)
Battery 6 8.25 (70%)
Below is the pack post charge. I suspect the charger shutoff late last evening (8-9 hours ago), so these batteries may drop a bit more, but good enough for my question. Should I be concerned that two of the batteries do not reach 100% or should I expect this for a few charges?

Code:
Pack 50.9 (100%)
Battery 1 8.51 (>100%)
Battery 2 8.54 (>100%)
Battery 3 8.48 (99%)
Battery 4 8.37 (85%)
Battery 5 8.50 (>100%)
Battery 6 8.54 (>100%)
Thanks

These batteries have sat a long time, I would exchange #4, Just tell them it was discharged below 50% upon arrival and it only comes up to 85% and you want a replacement.
Good job and keep checking!

Thanks Scottyb. I have left a message stating I do not want this battery in my new (and costly :)) pack. Will be a good test of their willingness to support customers. I expect one of two answers:

1. No problem will be out there on ____ OR

2. Hem and Haw....That is expected for the frst 20 charges, call us back in....

Also, Should I be concerned that after 3 cycles one of the batteries only comes to 8.48?

Guess I posted a bit too soon. At first they explained that there was a break in period and the battery should come up, but they also said they would replace if I wanted. I took the replace option, as I do not wish to worry about it. If you are in central FL and wish to purchase Trojan batteries I would not hesitate to use Ken Spano.

Thanks
Alan
