Default No 4th Speed

Hi everyone. I just found this forum and what a great source of information!

I need help with my 86 Club Car DS (36V). Everything seem to work like it's supposed to until I get to the 5th click. The solenoid clicks, but the speed does not increase.

I have checked the battery voltage and it seems fine and I have also checked for continuity across all solenoids and that checks out as well.

If anyone can help me with this I would be greatful. This cart is a christmas gift for my parents and I would like to get it working correctly before I give it to them. Thanks in advance for your help!

-Aaron

ok if solenoid is clicking than the microswitch that activates it is good...........its not uncommon at all for a clicking solenoid to be bad so if it were me and the 4th speed resistor coil is good i would replace that solenoid........................

Thanks for the response Shadowman! Is there a way to test the solenoid and the resistor? I'm not a big fan of buying parts if I don't have to.

there should be 2 different ways to test solenoid up in the stickies but other than solenoid and microswitch there is nothing else in that system to cause it......the resistor coils would be just visual.............................

I looked up in the stickies and didn't see anything and tried several searches for how to test the solenoids, but no luck. I'm new to the forum, so maybe I'm just not searching correctly.... Can anyone tell me off the top of their head how to test the solenoids, or does someone have a link? Thanks!

I see your thread now
First a quick overview of how the solenoid works:

How the Solenoid works:
The solenoid is a HD on/off switch or Contactor
the connection is made /broken between the 2 large terminals. The 2 small terminals are the activation circuit. Typically one terminal will have a constant negative connection to the pack. When Positive power is applied to the second small terminal the contact is drawn up against the spring to make contact. When power from either side of the activation circuit is removed then contact is released and the spring pushes it away interrupting the circuit ...It doesn't matter which small terminal is neg or pos on the activation circuit so long as you have both.... The solenoid is just a switch making and breaking the contact between the 2 large posts when the 2 small posts have pack voltage.
I hope this helps.

A continuity test between the 2 large terminals will tell you if the solenoids large contacts are actually making and breaking the connection.
A voltage test will also show you if voltage is going in on 1 big post and (when it clicks) coming out on the other side... remember the solenoid is just a big switch.

COOP34

here is a write up form ALLTREX about contactors (solonoids) and diodes

you might find it informative and helpful

O.k. I got a meter on the solenoids. Let me know if I did this correctly and what the results mean.

First Test: I put a red probe on one small stud and the black probe on the other small probe. I then pressed the accelerator down one click at a time getting 36V each time. (35.5 on the 5th solenoid)

Second Test: I put a red probe on one big stud and the black probe on the other big stud. I then pressed the accelerator down one click at a time seeing the ohm reader change from 1 to around 13 ohms or so with each click, except for the 5th solenoid which saw no change in ohms. (It stayed at 1)

Does this mean I have a bad 5th solenoid?

Yes I think so... the activation circuit is working on 5 but not the main contact.
