Default Cable upgrade question

I am upgrading my 99 clubcar with 4 ga welding cable. I notice 2 places on the f/r switch where the previous owner had installed 2 6ga cables going to the same place. I read somewhere that doubleing the 6 ga cable would be equal to having 1 3 ga cable. does that sound right? also does it hurt to leave the old cables in place and simply add new 4 ga cables to them?

Shadowman, What I was trying to say is the previopus owner of my cart had tried to upgrade a cable by doubling the cable instead of going up to 4 ga cable. does that have the same result?

2x 6awg wires is roughly a 25% increase in copper over a single 4awg strand. if the cables are terminated properly, you should be able to carry more current with 2x6awg than a single 4awg.

That's mathematically correct & good in theory .... but what I see is people buying new cables and bolting them on top of old cables. And that is not good for the connections. It's likely the old cables are high in resistance and need to be tossed off.

Bottom line is if you are putting on good fresh cable you won't need the old stuff, toss it.
