Default Motor Suggestion

I have a 2003 Club Car DS that I want to change the motor and controller for more torque.

I use my cart for hunting especially turkeys so I do a lot of creeping slowly and I also need torque. What I want is a a motor with good torque without a sacrifice of range. I also encounter some hills, carry corn for deer feeders and experience some mud.

What would be the best motor for this cart? It is a 48 volt system and I also need the suggestion for which controller to buy.

Thanks,
Thomas

I have an 07 precedent I use for deer hunting in very hilly terrain in Alabama. I had a motor and controller upgrade put in it by the dealer. They installed a D&D motor (model 502:2) and an alltrax controller (DCX500). Also installed a 400a solenoid and 4g wires. This setup has really worked well climbing hills and getting thru washouts and muck with swampfox tires. I would also consider the GE motor equivalent as I have read many posts that consider it a better motor. Another alternative would be to contact Plum Quick. They can upgrade your stock motor and sell the other parts. This may be a less costly option. Hope this helps. Do search in older postings. There is plenty of info in this forum on these options.

Vetman1 and Lgbarne may have 2 different drive systems so the motor & controller can be different.

I use a 500 alltrax for series with a 400 super-duty solenoid and D&D 10:02 8+hp Motor for what you want to do in a series cart.

I'd listen to what Scotty has to say since he deals with this on a day to day basis.

Scotty,
I am assuming Vetman has a regen DS. If not then the setup I am using will not work. So, was both series and regens options in the 03 DS?

Vetman,
What type of cart is your DS? Also would agree with DownSouth that Scotty is a very good source of knowledge.

What we are actually doing is taking a 2008.5 Club Car Precedent with the Excel system and completely changing over the electrical system. The new electrical system will be a 2003 Club Car DS system with a series motor.

When I posted this yesterday it was because the "kit" including the motor, controller, etc was on back order. It has since been "found" and should be arriving today.

Basically, I had already destroyed the electrical system on my Precedent while in the woods so I wanted a more durable hunting cart. Therefore we are going with the DS electrical wiring.

Will keep everyone informed when we get this project done.

Thanks for all the suggestions

The other question I guess I was asking in a round about way is how more torque affects your range. I have searched and read a lot on the forums, but seemed difficult to get an answer or understand that concept.

Either way my cart is in the best hands I could find so I am expecting at least 40 mph, a 150% increase in torque and a range of about 50 miles at least uphill both ways.

I could only wish.

40 MPH? I'm not putting a V8 in it!
