Question Need help turning 93 Club Car DS into hunting worthy vehicle.....

I recently bought a 93 model Club Car DS from an individual who didn't know much about it and took it on a trade. They guy before him had it wired up with 3 12v Batteries. When I brought it home is just seemed to be seriously weak on power. wouldn't hardly pull my pavement drive way here in WV. I then bought all new Autocraft GC2 6v Batteries at advance and wired them up with 4g wire-better power but still pretty weak. I then called buggiesunlimted's tech guy and he said the make sure my v glide was going all the way to the top resister, which it wasn't, so I adjusted my accelerator pedal to get it to the top and sanded the plates with 220 grit sandpaper and sanded the armature pad too. The cart had better power after that but it just still seems like this car would be WAY under power to handle a 6" lift and bigger tires. Am I missing something?
I've got the resisters behind the batteries and the single solenoid. I've also got a 36v. EZ Go charger with it.

I am a die hard bow hunter and want to use the cart to get to and from my stands with little scent and noise-hence the electric choice.

What can I do to beef my cart up power-wise?
I just don't want to order a lift kit and wheels/tires and then have a lagging cart end the end........

I'm mechanically enclined but the electrical may be my short coming- I'm learning how things work quickly though......

you need to upgrade to controller style, you can leave it 36 volt but until you get rid of the resistor setup your very very limited, once you do go controller you can do just about what you want...........................................

start with a 400 amp controller, a potbox and complete 4 gage cables thurout and than put your lift and tires on and see if your happy you might be, but if not then you can go with an aftermarket motor.......but for a hunting buggy you really want to get rid of the resistors and v-glide.......with a controller and pot and if you buy a set of cables you should be looking at 400 to 500 bucks........try calling scotty he can give you exact prices on that stuff............................................. ...

Putting 2 batteries in the bagwell does add 120 pounds to the cart but, your aluminum frame cart is about 100 pounds lighter than a steel frame to begin with. And adding 2 6v batteries will add 30% to your amperage reserve which will mean longer run times.

I suggest a 500 amp controller so you will have the option of running a bigger aftermarket motor later if you like. Besides in the last year my price has actually come down on the 500 Alltrax controller to near what the 400 used to cost.

You don't have a controller. That is what this conversion is all about.

A little background coming ...... wait a minute.

Early carts ( pre 1991) use a series of graduated sizes of speed resistor coils to regulate speed. Each coil in the group offered less resistance than the previous one. When you stepped on the gas 100% of the available battery power (amperage) was drawn and speed was regulated by how much of this amperage was burned off (wasted) by the resistor coils. So even if you push the peddle a little it drains the batteries same as wide open throttle. The gas peddle operated a wiper which swept a contact across stationary lugs which connected to the resistors. The solenoid merely switched power on /off to the speed wiper.
This is why it does you no good to just upgrade the solenoid....

Modern carts use solid state speed control. These controllers only draw as many amps as you ask for with the peddle.... If you push the peddle down 10% they deliver 10% of their capacity. I say their capacity because a controller is like a gate valve (or a hose bib) to the amperage stored in the batteries... We have different size controllers(valves) available so 10% of a 400 amp is less than 10% of a 650 amp controller.
Amperage = Torque
Voltage = Speed
The solid state controller does not waste any amps and this increases the run time. Hope this helps?
