Advantages of cable upgrade

I was wondering how much difference an upgrade from the 6ga. to 4 or even 2ga. will make. Will there be any HP gain? I was planning on changing them anyway I was just wondering which way I should go. I have an 81 CC DS. completely redoing it top to bottom front to back.

No hp gains. Just a better amperage delivery system.

In electrical motors amperage = torque and voltage = speed.

Thanks Scottyb. This will probably give me an answer to my other post about no low end. I'm doin all this stuff to the old gal so I figured I might as well do it up right. Which size do you recommend?

If you are rebuilding a 80s CC you have to decide how much of an upgrade you want to do. What are your performance goals? What are the carts loads and tire size and terrain for use gonna be? The best upgrades for that cart include upgrading the drive system to solid state speed control. 4 or 2 gauge runs most any system. Any more is just overkill. Kinda like having a 6" exhaust pipe on your car... at a certain point the benefits are played out.

But yes convert to a ESC system and get some 2 gauge cables

My cart is used strictly at our campground which is fairly flat but has a couple of hills. The roads are paved, and pretty smooth. I am planning on putting on 12" rims with low pro tires. I have no real performance goals per say. Of course I want fast but it isn't something I need nor am I gonna spend tons on. The whole reason for the question was to see which size I should put back on it. I want it to be as good or better than new when it is put back together. It's 30 years old. I don't want it to act its age . I don't. Why would I want my cart to?
What do I have to do to upgrade to the ESC?

stroke a check. esc is pretty much a drop-in upgrade.

on the cables, get the biggest you can afford. (within reason of course) #4 is popular, #2 should handle everything most sane individuals would want to do to a cart.

Make sure you get the correct controller for your series drive system, and match it up with a solenoid of adequate rating and proper voltage.
You need to know what the end product draws will be to judge what size is best.

Factors like big tires or aftermarket motors and voltage play into the equation.

when is enough to much? anything bigger than 2 gage would be a waste wouldn,t it? i mean even 2 gage if current flows into just 1 cable smaller than its either gonna be that smaller cable melts or theres a bottleneck anyways .........i think 4 gage is overall the best thing to upgrade to...........now just my opinion as i have never felt a difference going from 4 gage to 2 gage but going from 6 gage to a good premium set of 4 gage i have noticed real nice differences on carts...........................

I think the industry agrees that anything bigger than 2g is overkill.
Overkill won't hurt but it won't help either and it's hard to work with and cable & lug ends get expensive.
Controller engineers recommend 2g for controllers 500 amps & up.
Higher voltage systems tend to draw less amperage, a 48v system can run on 4g.
If you use 2g where 4g would suffice, then you have a little insurance for ample delivery after a bit of corrosion begins to settle in down the road in years to come... provided you keep your connections clean and coated you shouldn't have any corrosion, but this is ideal and ideal doesn't exist very often.
