Ultimate Precedent Hunting Cart?
I do a lot of turkey hunting and decided to turn lazy last year by buying an electric cart. I already had a Polaris Ranger and it just was not silent enough to slip up on any Toms during hunting season.
I ended up buying a 2008.5+ Precedent Cart after a lot of discussion with a guy who sells refurbished carts. I had purchased the ultimate 2-wheel drive hunting cart in my mind. It worked really well until I pushed it a little too far and got in a "stall situation". Basically, a Regen motor does not like to be put in a bind and keep getting electricity. It usually results in a burning smell. Electric carts and smells are usually not a good idea. After a lot of phone calls and some testing, we figured out that I had burned up something in my motor. I decided to upgrade my cart to a better Regen motor and a larger controller, but found out that not only was my cart an IQ electrical system, but also was an Excel system. Excel means that you have no options as far as anything bigger than a 250 amp stock controller. Don't worry, I called everyone possible and no one had anything available for the Excel system. Even with a bigger controller I was not going to eliminate the problem of a fragile Regen motor. I just could not justify putting another Regen motor in my cart and have to continually worry about being careful with the motor. After a few more phone calls and emails I decided to "upgrade" my Regen motor to a D&D series motor. I could not tackle this job on my own so I decided to take my cart to what I now believe is a pure Club Car Genius. I picked my cart up today and to say it is impressive is the biggest understatement. What the Genius did was convert my cart from a Regen system to a Series system. How he did it I do not have a clue, but it was worth every penny and reasonable in my opinion. Basically, now I have a Precedent cart except with the durability of a Series motor. It will now squeal the tires from a dead stop and runs about 22-24 mph with 22 inch tires and a rear flip flop seat.* It has enough torque that it will almost pick the front end of the cart off the ground from a dead stop. I cannot accurately estimate the increase in torque over the stock Precedent, but I suspect it is close to an increase in the 80-90% range at least. I initially had a bad taste in my mouth over being sold the Precedent. The Precedent is one of the best built "golf" carts built today, but it was not built for crawling through the woods and carrying a lot of cargo. Comparing models according to the Club Car testing done on a test track, the Precedent frame and suspension is at least 4 times more durable than the DS model. It has a solid boxed aluminum frame, a non-rusting battery tray and a better, smoother suspension. In my opinion a Precedent Cart with the Series motor has to be one of the best built Club Car Cart combinations ever created. I am not bragging on my cart because it was the Club Car Genius who put together this project. Just trying to share my experiences. I think I personally own the first Precedent Cart with a Series motor and it is better than I expected. I was lucky enough to find someone who knew what they are doing in order to convert to a Series motor. What is funny is that several people I called for information suggested that I call the same exact person to answer my questions. Thomas |

Yeah, David knows what he is doing on a cart. Everything he did was very professionally done and he does not cut corners.
He lives close to 5 hours driving time one way from my house and I did not regret spending that gas money. Thomas |

Re: Ultimate Precedent Hunting Cart?
Here's a few pics of the conversion...
I stripped it completely down and removed the entire factory harness. I then removed all the unnecessary circuits from the old Excel harness and was able to re-use the original Precedent plug behind the dash. I was also able to re-use the entire light kit harness without modification. It went together perfectly and plugged into everything just as it did before the overhaul. Re-used factory MCOR and all wiring, mounted F&R lever and ran all of the power wiring around the battery bucket to the new controller located on the original controller plate. Installed new series OBC. The factory controller cover fits nicely over it all, sorry I don't have a pic of that. I soldered and heat-shrunk every connection and re-loomed the harness with fresh wire loom. Everything came out pretty well. Overall I'm very happy with the results. |
