Steering knock problem
on a 99 CC DS, i installed all new bushings on the front and everything tightened up but i think i have a worn part between the steering column and the steering box. If anybody has had a 99+ GM full size vehicle, it sounds and feels the same way as that when the intermediate shaft goes bad. Over bumps, i have a loud knocking sound and i can feel it in the steering wheel. When i use one hand to pull back real hard on the steering column, it decreases this drastically. What part would this be? Steering "box" or somthing before the box?

Re: Steering knock problem
There could be many causes for the sound you hear and here is a list of what I have found through the years.
#1 It could be the intermediate steering shaft ( U joint assembly ) like you said in note about GM? #2 Rack and pinion assembly wear or lack of lubrication or mount bolts loose? #3 Retaining ring gone at bottom of steering gear shaft OR weak or broken shaft spring ( internal mounted )? #4 Bolt holding steering column to dash ( very hard to see and tighten )? Hope this will be of some help? |

Re: Steering knock problem
SEHunter I forgot to mention shocks as bushing can be worn enough to cause sound heard? Unhook one end on each shock and see if it solves problem?
SHADOWMAN not much change but got to try and keep mind off problems.THANKS FOR NOTICING |

Re: Steering knock problem
Thanks old mec. I dont know if somthing is bad or not but i took off the steering wheel and there was a bushing or race or somthing at the top of the steering column. I tapped it down until it seated on the upper column bearing. It was a tight fit but this made the knock go away because it made all the slop go away. I realized the knock was the steering shaft knocking around in the column up towards the top half. its quiet and still steers so i think im going to let it ride. I have spent too much money lately on my golf cart.

Re: Steering knock problem
What you may have done was to put pressure on the shaft spring to take up some wear or slack as I indicated in spring? If you will look at web site below you will find a parts list and diagrams for your year cart. Look at ( steering column ) and ( steering gear assembly ).

Re: Steering knock problem
i looked at the diagram. #23 is what i tapped back down towards the bearing. its a bearing seal. i assume its supposed to be down there anyway?

Re: Steering knock problem
Item #23 is a bearing seal and some times in TAKING steering wheel off the item #17 Wedge molded that fits into bearing and #22 Ring retainer that hold all upper parts in place will shift UP shaft allowing slack in upper bearing #18 causing loud sounds.
