New guy... OLD 79 electric cart

We had an old 79 electric donated to our horse rescue, but no batteries. Will need LOTS of TLC, but want to check out the electrics before I start in on the mechanical ( steering gear, linkage, ect. ). Serial number plate was badly corroded, but luckily it was old enough to be stamped instead of printed. Drilled the rivets and removed to read from the back, and if my backwards reading is right, it's a 79 ( A7911 02-150 ) Has a rotary type of switch on the accelerator pedal, and a row of relays in front of the axle / motor. Trying to determine 36V vs. 48V, and where to find a wiring diagram. Did some looking through the forums, but didn't see anything close, if I missed it all I can say is that there is a lot of information on this forum. Going to crawl under the back and see if I can get any info off the motor.

Any help would be appreciated.

if its a 79 its a 36 volt cart, does it have 3 pedals? if so its a carache and i beleive old mec knows much about these..........anyways to check the elec,s you need to put batteries in it but you can put three 12 volt deep cycles in to check things and if you find your gonna keep it than you can put the proper 6 volt batteries in it.......more than likely its gonna have 5 solenoids and resistor coils along with a microswitch for each solenoid but you have to get power to it 1st..............good luck and welcome.....................

Crawled under and found the plate on the motor, upside down of course... It shows 36V so that confirms it. Yes it has three pedals. What's a "carache" and what is the meaning of the third pedal. The pivot rod for all three pedals is stiff so I want to make sure what they are supposed to do before I go pushing to hard on things. Tried downloading the owners manual off the Club Car web site, but it didn't like the serial number. I'm assuming the wiring for the 81 DS is the same as the 79. Stuck my head a little farther down in the battery compartment and there were the resistor coils... you must have done this before And DS stands for...

Worked on vehicles since back when there were points to set, but I think I'll take this nice and slow.

Blew the wiring diagram up but it came out a bit grainy, I have multiple battery connections and want to make sure they go in the right places.

the 79 wiring might be different than the 81 so i would suggest wait for old mec as i beleive he has one of these 3 pedal carts.................

There is a wire diagram in the sticky above. It's a little easier to follow.
here is one I have thanks to scottyb it is exactly the same as my 81 wiring, and was a huge help. Good luck!

Paully, which sticky is that diagram ? Looks more like a schematic.

I didn't see one that looks like that.

Interesting post, and hello from another newbie. I'm on my second cart and just beginning to really learn about these things. I just went from an 84 junker to a 93 fairly respectable lifted job. You reminded me.... I had a 70' model Ford PU as my first vehicle and it was the last one I had with points. Just made me laugh to think back and remember when most of your buddies had a timing light.

These golf carts are a lot of fun, but man I am amazed at how quickly I could find myself becoming one of "them" with all the soup-ups, tricks and fancy stuff you can do with these things. I really did used to think "they" were nuts doing all this stuff with a dang golf cart!

Now I'm starting to think I'll like being in the asylum. Its' pretty cool here once you understand.
