Default Brake problem with CC DS

My braking has become weird. When I depress the pedal it goes down a couple of inches with smooth braking then bumps back up about a half inch under my foot with stronger braking. I replaced the cables and pads. The adjustments allow the wheels to turn freely (no dragging). All the moving parts seem to be fine. This still happens even after the rebuild of the brakes. Any suggestions?

Only time I ever felt anything remotely like that the peddle arm was hitting some bigger tires I had put on.... not saying that's your problem but I would look underneath while somebody steps on the peddle?

No discs yet but maybe soon. 1989 drums. The pedal is free and adjusted. The cables are new, so are the pads. I can't find a logical reason for the spring force to increase sharply (actually push the pedal up) as the pedal is depressed. Something else, this only happens if the cart is moving. It of course works fine sitting still, even up on jacks.

I might have figured it out. I'm going to have to tear them down again to see though. It looks like the design of the brake unit might have something to do with it. When you press on the pedal the lever on the back side of the brake unit of course causes the pads to move outward and rub the drumd in order to stop., It appears that the aft most pad is moved directly by the lever but the front moves as the whole mechanism pivots forward, as the top is fixed but the bottom is on a sliding mechanism. (I'll post a pic when I get it apart again.) I think it might be possible that the front half of one of the brakes is somehow locking up until enough foot pressure frees it so it doesn't smoothly get applied but jumps. Has anyone ever seen this?

Out of curiosity, did you install the trailing brake shoe in the correct position? They are stamped with a "T" for trailing and "L" for leading . . .

Is this cart lifted with a Spring-Over axle configuration in the rear?

Strange it just started. Check your spring retaining plates really well to make sure they aren't sliding around when you brake. This is very common with Spring-Over conversions.
