Default Weak 87 ds

Howdy fellas. I'm back. I just replaced batteries on a new to me 87 DS that was a freebie. This thing is unbelievably weak. With a fully charged pack, it refuses to climb a moderately sloped hill w/ appx 250#'s of people in it. I don't use it for golf, but it would never make it around a course. I'm getting 5 distinct solenoid clicks, and I just checked it on a flat road. Each click I can tell a difference in speed, except for the 4-5 click. I think that the last solenoid (pass side) allows the highest voltage to the motor? Could it be bad? Can I swap #3 solenoid for #5 to see if that allows all the voltage to the motor? I KNOW something is not right. I don't expect it to be fast, but I do know that it should not lack this much torque. HELP!!!!

Can you put the cart on jacks and see if the cart shifts into a faster speed with each solenoid click?

DO NOT let the motor hit top speed you can over rev and destroy the motor. You just want to go through the acceleration quickly ans see if there is a change in sound and apparent speed at each click.

Thanks for the help. It was the #5 solenoid. I swapped #5 with #3 and now have a big jump when throttling up, but the cart is noticeably faster and will climb a hill. (not very fast, though) I assume that it will improve when the batteries are broken in. Just ordered 5 new solenoids. Thanks again.

I've been doing a little studying, and everyone says that 48v on a 36 motor is a big improvement. I want to lift this thing, but I fear it does not not have enough power to pull the taller tires. Question: Is there anyway that I can maintain the antiquated 5 solenoid controller system, and add two more batteries in the golf bag well? This was a freebie cart, but I don't want to dump a huge amount of $$ into it. The power now is insufficient. (Mainly from a torque perspective)

theres more to it than just adding 2 more batteries......you have 36 volt solenoids you,ll need 48 volt solenoids.....plus a charging issue your 36 volt charger won,t charge the pack...........in all honesty if you don,t want to dump the cash in it to convert it to a controller cart...........you can leave it 36 volts but a controller setup you,ll notice a little difference but to go 48 volts you really need to do it right or its a waste of money.....and with just the 48 volt solenoids your at 300.00 bucks and then 2 more batteries a 48 volt charger.....dosn,t take a lot for it to add up............................

Sooooo. If I add two batteries, get a new charger, and replace the solenoids, will the rest of the electrical system handle 48v? I know a heavy duty F/R switch is probably needed as well. I thought I saw 48v solenoids on Ebay for 25-30$? That sounds like about $400 + the charger. Would it work?

yes it should, you can keep motor, the only thing i,m not 100% certain on is the speed box for the microswitches that activate solenoids but that should work i can,t see why it wouldn,t............................
