Battery readings

I am about as mechanical as a cactus so you'll have to forgive me. I see on several posts references to readings on batteries such as 12.1, 12.3 etc. What does that mean? And how is it measured...with a voltmeter? Thanks!

Individual voltage per battery as measured with a digital voltmeter.

Ok, thanks. And that can be purchased at most any auto parts store I assume. So in checking, must the cables for each battery be disconnected? And do you check them after being charged? What is the ideal rating (or range)? What else would I need to know about this process? I really appreciate your help.

The meters can be had just about anywhere, parts store, sears, ect

Yes the cables need to be disconnected to test each battery individually

Test After fully charged and sitting for about 12 hours for a true reading

Range will vary depending on what voltage battery you have

Also, check water level in battery after charging and top off accordingly

Wrong. No need to disconnect any cables to measure voltages.

How are you going to get an individual battery reading while connected in a pack?

You set the meter to the 20VDC range, place the RED probe on the POSITIVE post of the battery you want to measure, then place the BLACK probe on the NEGATIVE post of the SAME BATTERY, and you read the voltage. I gaurantee accurate results.

Next week I will show you how to read each battery in succesion and see the voltages add up as you go. This requires a slightly different technique.

Because your putting the leeds from your meter on a single battery pos+ and neg-, thats how you get a reading of the single battery, and if you want the pack reading put your leeds on the pos+ of the first battery, and the neg_ of your last battery of the pack and you get a pack reading, -- you do not need to unhook any cables to get your volt readings
