More power out of 87 DS?
Typical answers ive seen already... motor, controller, wires. blah blah blah :)
But im puzzled, I dont see any kind of controller but the only thing I do see are resistor coils. Is there anything to do to like bypass those and get more powahhh? Im just trying to find cheap ways to get through this for now without ruining the cart at the same time. |

Resistors are very old technology. I pulled all mine out and chunked them and went solid state. The performance from my cart is awesome. At a minimum though, you need the conversion and the controller. Thats around $700. I converted to 48 volts and added a new motor, and the upgrade went to $1700 without batteries. Still no regrets.

You should check out this guy's build murded...It is exactly what we need to do to ours... I am new to all this too, but what I have learned is that no matter how much throttle you apply with a resistor setup you are using up 100% of your power. If you ask for ten percent, you get it, but the other 90 gets burned up in the coils. Very primative.... If you want to get rid of this stuff, you have to spend some money on a controller setup. |

Re: More power out of 87 DS?
Howdy guys. I just did the conversion on my 87 DS. Against the suggestions of the knowledgeable people here, I added 2 batteries (8x6volt) to the bag well, ordered up all new 4 gauge cables, changed all 5 solenoids to 48V (2 were bad anyway), and upgraded to the 48v charger. I wanted to lift the cart, but it was anemic w/ the 36 volt system. It now runs VERY well and I added a 6" lift and 22" wheels and tires. I don't know for how long, though, as the coils aren't designed to handle 48 volts, I'm told. The good news is that I now have a 48 volt cart and charger, and I can convert to solid state when this setup gives up. Perhaps it won't, but I'm not betting on those coils lasting forever. Hope this helps. W/O charger, I've got $125 in solenoids and $125 in cables. The cart was a freebie, and needed all new batteries anyway.

Above is incorrect advice! Applying 48v to a resistor coil cart will result in harm to the cart and potential hazard from melting components or fire! Solenoids are voltage specific. Running standard 36v golf cart solenoid on 48v will result in burning up the activation circuit. Do not put 48v to a 36v resistor coil cart . This is bad advice. |

Scotty, I could've sworn I heard you say this before. Maybe it was someone else. From this point, I won't have any trouble remembering.
