AHHH DAMMMIT!! i totally F'd up. I was taking my GE motor apart, and pulled the end cap off. Now, the spring loaded brushes won't let me put it back on. Any ideas will help greatly. On the bright side. The end bearing needs replaced so I can get it done.

there should be holes in the end plate where you can place a paper clip or nail to hold the brushes in place until you attach....not sure if you have one

Pull the brushes out far enough the springs will "cock" them to one side of the holder, slip armature in then put brushes back in place. Not far out as in to the inside, pull them to the outside. Use the pressure of the spring to hold the brush. You kinda use the spring to push the brush to the side. Hard to describe it.

Bruce have you ever taken a golf cart motor down to the brushes?

ROADY89....... I have a 12 ton hydraulic press in my house that i use to rebuild 3-phase and single phase motors. I have in the past opened DC generators and alternators and have used the "NAIL" procedure.....

no I have not...... but tell me how different is the armature configuration from a 110volt drill with brushes or a car generator with brushes...

a lot of brush motors provide holes for holding the brushes in place....

Pull the spring away from the brush. Push brush all the way back (to the outside as far as it will go without physically coming out of the holder, release spring and allow it to rest on the SIDE of the brush, thus pushing the brush to the side, not inwards. When you get the armature back in place, pull spring back away from side, push brush in, let spring go back to the END of the brush, thus pushing it back in.

Yes, a lot of them do but since you have never done it you didn't know that not all brush holder assemblies you can do that or even work as intended...or as " injuneered". In the case of a new brush, the new brush wont go out far enough to pass that hole before hitting the case. (depends on factors) Works fine as long as the case is away from the brush plate.....which is a whole other mistake
