how do I test my solinoids

I have mid 80's c c and belive everything is okay but im new and want to be sure. With my rear wheels off the ground and i push the pedal slightly I get a click at number 1 solinoid and wheels dont turn. as i increase the accelerator #2 clicks and wheels turn and so on till #5 engages. now is it working properly?. with pedal not pushed and key on i read 38.8 volt with accelerator pushed fully I read .01 volts is it working properly. My solinoids have very thin wires 18 gauge or blue ,pink, orange, light blue and black running to a small white box . is that something that can be checked. my cart slows to about half speed on inclines. then resumes. I have new batteries and cables and every connection has been cleaned and sprayed with protector. My motor is in perfect condithion, the brushes almost new condition and motor internally was spotless. Need help out of ideas for chasing this problem. Is this just the way it is? any info would be appreciated.

Yeah that all sounds right. Electric carts do slow on hills but they keep on truckin'
The first solenoid opens the circuit to the other solenoids. Each of the other sequential solenoids open the gate for more and more amps to the motor. Thus, you have speed control...

thanks scottyb My buds cart never slows up hill at all he has a newer ezgo though. I get passed by the senior citzens out walking in the morning. kinda embarassing. is there something I can do to get a little more though?

That sounds serious. Newer carts are better equiped for hill climbing. Are you sure your last ( highest speed solenoid works? When it was jacked up you should hear a noticable increase in motor speed with each solenoid opening.
Lastly look at your batteries with a voltmeter. read them all and see if there is aweak one?
Do you have old or corroded cables and connections?

all solenoids click as the pedal is increased and voltage drop occurs as each one clicks all the way to # 5.untill reaches 0 and batts are new. this occurs with fully charged and after 6 hours of continous use. It climbs steady even on very long hills. Im just want to make sure the guy I bought it from was less than honest on the whole deal as far as questions I asked before I bought it. oh and I put new cables on when I bought the batts

Okay. It sounds from what you are telling me that all of the speeds are working. My electric carts have always slowed on the hill climbs but....never so much that senior citizens could walk past me on foot? I would check the batteries.

well Ill check them again Ill have them load tested also but at full charge I almost 39 volts just shy of 39 . I will veryify I can hear the differnce in speed for # 5 five . I checked it today several times but maybe check it a little more to be sure. It goes 8 or 10 miles an hour and about half on incline. It does not very in speed just strong and steady no matter how long of an incline. Then resumes to normal cruising speed. and it will do it all day. never a lack of power even after 6 hours of continous use. its just the inclines. i appreciate all your time if you can think of anything else please let me know.

If you are correct and the cart goes 8-10 mph tops and 4-5 mph uphill.....It does sound a little slow?
Are the tires stock size? 18 x8 x8
Has the rear end been changed? (gear-wise?)

ALSO
New batteries get stronger after several cycles to break in.

tires are stock and gear is original assuming and only recharged batts 2 times since new they last forever. I do know that a retired couple owned it for 20 years, they lives next to a golf course. and that the guy I bought it from had it a years or so and said he hadnt done anything to it since he owned.

Okay! My warning bells went off on " only recharged batts 2 times since new they last forever." You need to recharge more often !!! Especially when new. Batteries will increase in strength after several charge cycles. Permanent damage can occur if they are drawn down too low. 36v is 'empty'. recharge at 37 volts. Recharge after each use if 30 minutes or more of peddle time. Do not leave batteries in a discharged state for long times.
