Over Heating 2003 Electric Cart

I have a 2003 48 volt IQ cart. I put in a EMP motor to gain top end speed. When I just travel at slow speeds for a few miles the cart will stop. I called Chuck at EMP and he stated, he has built & sold many motors and this is the fist time he had this problem. We figured out it is the controller getting overheated. He related I should use the cart at high speed and further suggested.

Since the aluminum frame where the controller is the place that is getting hot I should extend the aluminum so the heat will have a larger area to cool. He also suggested placing a small computer type fan on the area and when I run at low speeds turn it on to help keep the controller cool.

Any other suggestions and if everyone thinks the fan will help how would you suggest to connect it.

Your pulling more amps at partial throttle it seems. "Any" high speed motor at slow speeds under a load will pull a lot of amps. If it were a torque motor it wouldn't get hot like that.

also go to 4 GA wires get the juice to it might help ,feel your wires on batteries and to motor see if they are getting hot those high speed motors need the power.when i up-grade a motor i always go with no less then a 400 to 500 amp controller plus you will gain some torque back at bottom end ..just my 2 cents

Thanks for the reply. The motor isn't really that hot and the wires are ok also. I really don't want to buy a controller so I guess I'll go with the fan. Any suggestions on wiring it?

yep just wire it to 1 batt that would be 8 volts it will run a bit slower but last longer or cross 2 that would be 16 volts will run really fast but don't know how long it will last

Today a friend and I wired put a muffin fan on the cart. We ran the cart at slow speed and half speed for a few miles. It didn't over heat. I just hooked it up with clips to see if it work so now I have to wire it in. I'm going to put a toggle switch on the dash so I can use it when necessary.

We had to make a bracket to hold the fan in the correct position.

cool deal glad to hear the fan idea worked out...if the fan don't pull a lot of juice then wired to one battery should be OK but if you leave the clip on you can rotate batteries as not to make 1 weaker then the rest over a period of time just my 2 cents..

Done - I hooked up the the fan hard wired it and put a toggle switch just under my key. I check it out and everything is working just fine. I really don't need to put the fan on unless we are riding through the woods or high grass for a extended period of time.
