Default Relay or OBC 2003 Club Car

Ok guys,

I need some opinion here. I bought a 2003 Club Car DS in January for camping. I stored it for the winter and removed the batteries from it. I cleaned the batteries and the battery compartment with soda water mix. Topped up the batteries with Dist. water. I tried the cart out. worked great. A little sluggish up hill from sitting for 4 months. And the battery light comes on. With really no pattern. So, I plugged in the charger and the meter went up to 15 amps. Then bang. Stopped all together. I am thinking that it is the relay. I bypassed the relay and the plugged in the charger and it began to hum. I have sinced oreder a new one and should be here this week. Could it be the OBC? I am new to the Golf cart scene!!!!

are you sure it didn,t pop the circuit breaker on charger? did you try resetting it?......how about diodes and heatsink? they would go before relay i think........and are you certain you wired everything back up right? dosn,t take but one wire..............................................

Yes. I re wired everything up right. When I jumped the relay. The charger came on. But hooked the relay back up and not a thing from the charger. So, the breaker is fine or it wouldn't have come on after jumping the relay, am I correct on that? That is why I thought it might be the relay. Like I said. The charger came on when I tried it the first time to 15 amp on the meter, then just stopped about a 1 minute after wards. I diagramed how the battery wiring was and tripple checked it before removing the batteries. And did the same when re installing the batteries. I am hoping that it is the relay. If the batteries are too low, would that cause the charger to stop working. It doesn't seem right that the charger came on for a minute then just quit. I will be at a loss if it isn't the relay!!!

when they come on for a minute and quit 8 out of 10 times its diode/heatsink........can you try the charger on another cart or get a known good charger to try on yours?.........................................

Hey Shadow. Thanks for the input. But where is the diode/heatsink at? Does it make sense that after bypassing the relay and plugging in the charger. It comes on. So if it were the diode/heatsink. wouldn't it not come on at all or shut off like it did with relay hooked up?

diode is in charger on rear left back panel it has 3 wires going to it......the reason i asked about trying a kwnon good charger or yours on another cart is that what your decribing is something that will happen if OBC is bad it will work with relay bypassed but not when relay is hooked right and for as little as i have seen relays go bad ( don,t get me wrong they do go bad ) but not near as often.......so the charger coming on and then quiting after a minute could be diode related but the bypassing relay and it working could be OBC related....................i have never tried to bypass a relay when charger acted this way to see if relay wa issue so i can,t tell you what would happen if it acted that way it would be just another guess......but you might to at least test these other things to make sure...........................................

Got my new relay. Installed and bingo, the charger is working. I'm happy it wasn't the OBC. Just a $12 part!!! I also recommend bobcrites on Ebay. Part was shipped the day of the purchase and great price on part and shipping.

Usually you smell a sharp acrid odor if the diode pack is fried.
