Batteries are overheating

I have a 1986 Club Car. The batteries are 6 Trojan 105. When I use the charger, there is a strong odor and the batteries are really hot, so I have to unplug the charger. The reading on the charger is about 21-22 and remains the same before and after. The golf cart is extreemly slow. Any one have any ideas. I just had it serviced and 1 battery was replaced.

make sure that battery is installed correct..........theres no reason the charger should stay at 20 amps ......even after using a cart in most cases when you plug charger in it goes to 15 amps or so..............so if this just started after the 1 battery was replaced they might have hooked it up backwards...............the pos cable on that battery should go to a neg. terminal on another battery and the neg. cable on that battery should go to a pos terminal of a battery........follow me? .......................can you post a good pic. of batteries as they are hooked up now?.........that could also account for lack of speed.................who serviced it?......have you called them? hard to beleive they would give it back to you like that i would assume they took it for a test drive when they finished.................................

Thank you Shadowman for your reply. I will post a picture of the battery set up as it is. All Parts for Carts is who serviced it. When he dropped the cart off he said it would be slow for a couple of rounds and eventually start to gain speed. I've used it for about 6 rounds with no improvement. He told me to be patient but for as much money it cost for him to replace 1 battery and have the same result as when and why I took it to him in the first place.

Interested in any plausible explanation as to why in the hell it would 'speed up' after a while?

A new battery is only 75% of it potential until it is cycled several times.
However. a new battery will deteriorate quickly when mixed in with an older group.

That being said, would you expect his cart so see some significant difference in a single battery in a pack of six? From dead battery to even 75% battery should pretty much bring him to near-normal speed, huh?

I don't like replacing one or 2 batteries. By the time 1 or 2 fail the others are compromised. You can bet on that!

You can change out 1 or 2 if you are willing to constantly monitor and be ready to change out #3 or ?
Generally the customer is much happier with a new set than a less expensive & less effective patch.

theres more to this then 1 battery.......that dosn,t explain charger going up to 20 amps and just staying there to the point you have to unplug it.......i agree 100% about replacing just 1 or 2 batteries but if the post is accurate theres more to it than that........unless he put a completely dead shorted battery in cart...................................

Double check your wiring connections! I'm with " shadowman " on that you may have a battery installed backwards, or one that is shorted! Even though a shop did the work doesn't mean it was done correctly!

Here is a picture of the battery set up. One thing I noticed today was that foward is only about 3-4 MP BUT backwards is close to 15 MP! Does this make sense to anyone? Would it still cause the baterries to overheat when charged? And the fact the charger never changes, allows staying at 21-22 regardless if used for a round of 18 and then on the charger for 6 hours until the batteries start to get to hot and then unplugged. battery.jpg
