Default Charger only going halfway on meter

Hey everyone,

98 Club Car 48 volts. Charger comes on & charges fine up to halfway on the needle. Then the needle stops moving but it continue to charge. I left it running over night & when checking I could hear the batteries bubbling & it was only showing halfway after charging all night. Checking across the batteries (1st to last + & -) it showed 54v. Do I have a bad charger or what?

Thanks,
Ronnie

. . . charger cycle can take up to 16 hours, which, at that point it shuts down . . should complete within that 16 hour time frame . . voltage readings of 60+ volts in that last stage of charging is normal . . plug in charger and pay attention to the 16 hour limit and see if charge drops to about 5 amps or less in last stage of charge cycle . . .

ps . . "bubbling" sound is normal . . .

RonnieK... when you say "Halfway up the needle" what do you mean? Do you mean that when you plug the charger in it only goes up halfway to around 10 amps or so? Or do you mean that it will charge at a high amp, then taper down to no less than half way? Both are two different scenarios. A charger that won't charge at a high amperage such as 15 may need a heatsink. A charger that won't taper down to a trickle may not be a problem, but the batteries in the cart may be.

What I'm talking about is when I plug the charger in it goes all the way to the right & then slowly moves to mid way on the gauge & stays there.

That is normal. The meter will slowly move to the left (less amps) and eventually to zero. This can take up to 16 hours.

If the batteries are only partially discharged, 15 % or so, the battery charger may only come up half way or so.
That's normal.

Sonicj is correct, however if your batteries are junk they'll never charge up enough to allow the charger to reach a low amp trickle mode. The OBC should time the charger out after 16 hours regardless of where the ammeter is pointing, but this definitely doesn't mean it's fully charged. If you're only showing 54 Volts after charging all night I'd definitely point my finger at the batteries.

David, do you mean right after the charger shuts off or after a 12hr rest?

Plugged it in this morning & it charged for several hours dropping below 1/2 way on gauge. I had to leave for a hour & the charger was off when I got back. Gonna see how it charges in a couple of days.

Thanks all
Ronnie
