Default taller tires gain noticable MPH?

i gotta ask for a couple reasons and wonder if anyone has had the experience i have had, i know its not just a myth and of course anytime you add height your controller doesnt know it and allows the same speed thus increases MPH ,,,,,, BUT?????

heres my deal: I GPS my cart at 33mph with low profile 18" tires right after a full battery charge. I then add the taller tires 21" (thinner with less tread on the ground which should help even more) and the next day after a full charge GPS it again down the same road same time, same temp and the GPS says 33 and maybe i got up to 34 briefly but certainly nothing noticable at all.

So heres a question for someone smarter then me. For evey inch you add in height how much do you think you gain in "real world" mph? I'll bet going from 18 to 25 would be noticable but is 2 inches? thxs for adding to this thread i would love to hear some idea's/thots on it, should be interesting to hear other folks thots on it!!!!!. cart safe, paul

I'm not sure there is an exact formula, because there are other factors such as differences in weight. When I went from stock wheels and tires to 23" tires, I GPS'd my cart at about 1.5mph (if I remember correctly) speed increase. But that doesn't mean I could get the same increase from going up the same number of inches. I'm surprised that you noticed no significant change in speed but at 33mph, you are already screamin compared to me.

33 mph, wow, how much do you expect? Anyway, the controller and battery cables may be your limiting factor. Your motor can pull no more than what the controller can produce in amps applied in output. Bigger tires will require more amps to make more speed.

thats good to hear. i think most people (including me) think bigger tires is like 5 mph more but the change is pretty small really

Going from 18s to 20s easily gained 3+ mph on my old Marathon. Combined with the governor, I went from 12 mph to 23 mph. But other things took a toll in the end. Going up a hill, you'd lose more speed with taller tires. Plus they were slower off the line... especially with 3 or 4 people on the cart.
There is no replacement for displacement.

hanny

I just FRIED a terminal off a brand new battery yesterday............

I took the wife around the block to show her what 50+ feels like on boost. But I didn't want the go 50+ the whole way (about 5 miles) so I turned the boost off and kept the throttle down, which is about 30 to 33 mph on 48 volts (25" tires BIG torque motor 800amp custom controller). I learned the hard way that heat builds over time.........

I had super nice custom 4ga low resistance wires and now that I have done this EXTREME test I have researched amp capacity for the various wire sizes and how much loss there really is in these systems with big amp draw.

Check out the calculator at the bottom of the page here:

http://www.powerstream.com/Wire_Size.htm

I bet I had 15% drop which is totally unacceptable.
I'm running O size wire now, doubled where I can to eliminate heat!

I posted this yesterday:
http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/extre...ontroller.html
But it seems to be voodoo to most on here...............
