What I did to my batteries today.
I noticed when I got my new cart that there was some corrosion on the battery trays, and I noticed there was some spillage from the tops of the batteries. Well, I opened up one of the caps, and it was way too full! It turns out, every cell was about one inch higher than it should have been. Last night I fully charged the cart and today, I took a little squirt pump from a bottle of 409 and pumped out all of the excess water. I left it 1/8" below the fill tube, like it says on Trojans site. I also cleaned all of the battery trays and sprayed every connection with anti-corrode spray. I just couldn't believe how overfull they were! The first picture shows the difference between a cell that was overfull and one that I had pumped out. The next picture shows how much came out of each battery (all 4 cells). It was probably about a half gallon of excess total.

Re: What I did to my batteries today.
The downside is somebody overfilled these, most likely with tap water.
But you can't just take out the water, you have to take out the acid too. Check your specific gravity. Hang onto that excess electrolyte you took out, if you can. Keep it spotlessly clean. As you need to add water, add that back instead. Hopefully you can get your SG back to normal, over time. |
