Lights, 16volt?

I was told by a local dealer that I can run my lights on 2 batts 16V and it would be fine because they do it all the time. I hooked them up and they seem fine. I know on a truck you have 12V lights but the altenator can put of up to 15v so have any of you done this? THANKS.

You are right. Works great and saves you bucks.Should install a fuse.

9 out of 10 times it will work but they are a bit brighter then normal however i have seen them on 16 volts where they not only blow the bulbs they melt the light housings......if yours didn,t blow when hooked up you should be fine.........i would as suggested add an inline fuse.................or if you want to play it safe just install a voltage reducer................................

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe if you run a bulb at a higher voltage than it's rated for it's life will drastically reduced.

That is correct but this is not a drastic over voltage. If you look at the charging voltage from your vehicle alternator it can easily push up to 15 volts plus. A better solution might be to wire them in series and connect across 3 eight volt batteries.

yes it works, mine run on 16v. Bright as hell but has melted the plastic housing some. they get **** HOT. but all else is good. yes im using a fuse

You can run on 2 batteries but need a voltage reducer from 16 to 12.
The better way is to get a voltage reducer reducing the pack from 48 volts to 12. I got a reducer for about $85 on Ebay, also used it to install a power outlet that I can run a radio and charge my phone.

Agree with plasterface, we install lights this way as well sometimes but not only does it reduce buld life, melt lenses, but most of the time it will reduce the life of the two batteries you hook them to also....I see this constantly. Best bet is to get a 48-12 reducer to avoid future problems.
