Club car has 1 speed.... FAST!!!
1986 club car. I bought this old cart a few yrs ago for next to nothing. I put another $3500 in it. Lift, tires, wheels, paint, selector switch, solenoids...etc. I parked it in the garage till the batteries went to crap. I bought a new gas cart to use to pull my car at the drag strip so I ended up giving it to my father. He put new batteries in it. Like the title says... it has only the high speed. From what he is telling me, he put it on jack stands to test. The wheels spin faster with each click of the pedal. Which is normal. But on the ground he says it barely moves until you hit the forth solenoid and then it jerks your head off.
Im headed there in 2 weeks (3 hour drive) to visit and figured I would take that time to get it fixed for him. Has anyone had this issue before and know what the fix is? I need to know that its NOT the motor. Solenoids and micro switches I will bring but, is there anything else I should be looking at? He does not have a multimeter nor does he know how to use one. So he can't test anything to give me an idea of what is going on. Sorry for the long read. Thanks |

That sounds weird. I thought those solenoids worked or didn't work? Still my guess is solenoids. 3 hours away I would bring all 5 solenoids and 5 micro switches with me.... along with some cable and ends to make up anything that may be corroded beyond use.

Could there be an issue with the resistor coils? The solid state controller couldn't be any simpler. It either makes contact or it doesn't. So troubleshooting that shouldnt be an issue. But, the fact that the wheels spin when off the ground has me wondering. What voltage comes out of the controller to the solenoids? Is it 12V's firing the solenoids or 36v's? Also, are the micro switches in the controller 2 pole or 3 pole? I have seen both on the net.

Re: Club car has 1 speed.... FAST!!!
the whole speed system on the cart is simple it just consists of the solenoid, micrswitches and coils , plastic slider......you can get all microwitches and slider for like 15.00 dollars tops and c.c. solenoids last i checked i was paying 16.00 each............if you replace everything at least you,ll have a few spare solenoids and micrswitches if needed..........the slider in the box might be ok but they do wear so it would suck to have everything and find out you need the slider............................................ ....

I agree with most, it has to be micro-switches or solenoids or both. But for all but high speed to not be workign and the solenoids and switches being fairly new that is odd. before replacing them, i would clean the brass buss bar with some steel wool. i would open up the box and check and see if the microswitches are making contact properly. Also check the throttle position. they can get loose and make funky things happen. They have an adjustment bar/rod that screws or unscrews to lengthen or shorten and take up any play. |
