new to sparky need help

I just picked up a free resister 36 volt DS. Batteries are a bit low but still seem to be good. I got it cause the charger is dead. I need to know how to diagnose it. Also the ignition key is completely missing not just the key but the whole switch. I know nothing about electric carts.

make sure theres enough juice to turn charger on......i beleive you need at least 28 volts for charger to come on...............................

Ok update. Charged the batteries with a car charger at 6 volts. I wired all the +'s and all the -'s together and charged them all at once. Let it sit all day and the volts topped off nicely. I wired the batteries back up how they are supposed to be and plugged in the charger. My father was over and noticed that the relay inside the Accu Charger wasn't clicking at all. Amp meter didn't jump at all. Can I safely jump the relay to test? I'm having a hard time figuring out this charger works.

you should be able to but wait for someone else to respond cause i havenever did it on a 36 volt cart..........................................

Shadow I really appreciate all the help and tips you've given me already. Is there an onboard fuse that would stop it from charging on the cart side and would that stop the relay? Man if it were gas I'd be giving out all the answers but the biggest reason I got it is to learn... My head hurts lol. My father is a retired electric engineer but it sucks having to ask him for advice cause that means his son would actually have to listen to him LOL

under the seat on top of charge receptical theres an ob-long chear plastic thing with a thin wire running thur it..........thats a fuse and yes that would stop everything..................................

Yup blown fuse. Being sunday every where is shut down so I went to autozone and picked up a self resetting breaker with threaded posts. I'm going to try that later. On the other thread you said to go ahead with putting the 48 volt setup in this cart. I just want to make sure I have thought of everything before I do. First the 48 volt is I think pds the FNR switch is on the dash not by the knee and I want to be sure that the resistor cart motor won't interfere with it's function. I don't care that much about the regen part working at all (if that's what pds carts are). And secondly I'll have to get a 48 volt charger with new batteries. Are those $99 Sam's club chargers any good? Is there anything with the throttle assembly that will need to be switched out? I'm more then just a compitent mechanic and I'm sure if I went out there and looked I'd know but I'm trying to get all the knowledge before I dig in.

Is there any way to test the 48 volt setup so I know it's good before I put it in? I have several multi meters. What kind of speed do you think I'll get out of it with the 48 electronics on the 36 motor all else stock?

the only way to really test it is if you have 4 12 volt batteries laying around that you can throw in hook up right see where your at............................

Well it's a sepex system so it won't go into the resistor series cart too easly (read cheaply) so it's staying 36v. Got the pack voltage up to 32 volts by hooking all the positives together and all the negatives together and letting my poor car charger set to 6 volts bring it up. Changed the wires back and plugged the charger in. Bam kicked on. Fuse was still good and everything. So charger finished it's cycle still only 32.1 volts. Checked water level (should have done that first but in my mind I wrote off the batteries any ways needed to check out the charger). Ended up pouring 3.5 gallons of distilled in spread out thru all 6 batts. Ouch. Couldn't see any fluid. The fact I got them to hold at 32.1 for 3 days is a miracle. Then I read on the charger is said 48 vdc 21 amps... Oh boy. That's why the PO thought it was a 48 volt system. So he's been charging them with a 48v charger and never added fluid. No wonder. At 32.1v all 5 solinoids clicked nicely but not motor movement but I didn't expect it too. But all in all looks like a decent cart for the free price I paid. So now to the question. How bad is that 48v charger hurting those batts. Oh and the amp gauge on the charger has yet to make it over 3 amps. Big surpirse considering the batts that are in it.
