03 Club Car will only run in reverse
Hello all, I have been looking for advice and this looks like the best source I can find. I have an '03 Club Car 48v IQ (AQ0346) That I have had for 4 years. This spring when my wife went to use it she backed out of the garage, went to go forward, and nothing. I found a battery that was bad, only around 6 volts, the other 5 are about 8.6 volts. Replaced the bad battery, showing about 52 volts across the pack, and still no forward. Took all the battery wires off and cleaned, took the F/R switch apart and checked it, no change. With the rear end jacked up it will run in reverse fine, but no forward. When you push the pedal in reverse you hear the solenoid click and then it runs, in forward you hear the click, and maybe a second or two later another click like it is dropping out, not sure what could cause that. I tried resetting the OBC as well. Just looking for advice on what to look for next, don't want to just start replacing parts, they get expensive. What does the solenoid control ? With the way it's wired I can't see how it could control direction. Thanks for any help.

Best place to start would be to check each battery under a load with either a multimeter or load tester...cart may only run in reverse because it is half speed, sounds like you may have a battery dropping out under a load...but thats just a starting point not a def.

Thanks, I will check the rest of them tonight. Is it best to check voltage across the whole battery pack to look for a drop and then isolate it, or check them one by one ?

Yes, checking the pack as a whole under a load will tell you if there is a large drop across the pack...then test each battery by itself to determine if you have one or more failing.

Re: 03 Club Car will only run in reverse
I hate to say this, but if the batteries were all the same age you're more than likely going to find another bad battery that is charging up to a normal surface charge but is dropping voltage quickly under a load.
I've found that when one battery fails in a series of batteries that are the same age, the rest aren't far behind. I'm hoping that this isn't the case and it's a MUCH cheaper fix though, -Scott H. |
