Default '97 DS Won't Move

I have a '97 DS Powerdrive Plus (SN A9739-608955). The other day, the cart stopped going at all, in either forward or reverse. No solenoids click. The batteries charge OK and read 50V. I confirm that the key switch works. The FWD-REV toggle switch works and operates the buzzer. I see 50V at the first of 2 solenoids (red wire), and I measure 47 V on yellow wire out. What's a next step in troubleshooting this? Is the a way to activate 1 or both of the solenoids? (What doeach of them do?). Thanks!

Yours is a Regen I drive system. The solenoid closest to the speed controller is the ON/OFF switch for the high amperage supply. Put your test leads across the 2 small terminals, you should have pack voltage(48-50v) there when you press the gas to get the solenoid to click closed. Is that happening?

Scotty B - Thanks for the reply. I checked the solenoid (the one with the big coil resistor in parallel) with key on, accel depressed, both FWD and REV. Both control terminals read +50V (relative to battery pack negative) all the time. The terminal with the brown wire is not ever being pulled low. The same is true with the other solenoid - both control terminals +50V at all times. (What does this other solenoid do?).

What is my next step?

Thanks!

your checking wrong solenoid you need to check the one without that coil........thats the one you want to jump its the main the other is for reagan system....................................

Thanks Shadowman. So this other solenoid, it's function seems to be switching the heavy red wire from the battery pack (+50V) to a heavy yellow wire which goes to the controller A2 terminal. Should I activate this solenoid by connecting its neg side (the blue/white wire) to the neg battery pack voltage? Thanks!

yes, jack a rear wheel off the floor and bring 48v to the small (activation) terminals... see if the cart runs? can you verify if power goes through the solenoid? If if has an internal precharge resistor, as some did [marked with red+], then you will read 48v through the solenoid all the time...

if in doubt you can use a battery cable to jumper the solenoid and bypass it for testing purposes.... now you should have power between controller B+ and B-, yes?

OK, next step: I shorted the main solenoid's negative control terminal to batt-pack negative, and it actuated! With the jumper in place, both forward and reverse work when I press the pedal. According to my wiring diagram, this solenoid is controlled by the motor controller, so the controller doesn't seem to be activating it??

While testing this, I noticed that the other solenoid, the Dynamic Braking solenoid was activating/deactivating on its own. It appears to activate when I press the pedal, and deactivate by itself a second or two after I release the pedal. The control wire for this solenoid also goes directly to the motor controller, hence at least part of the motor controller is functioning!

What should I do next? Thanks!!

Okay The jumper is supplying the neg. side of the solenoid activation circuit. I think you need a new OBC. Not 100% on your 97 year model butr later models the solenoid activation (-) was controlled by the OBC wait for Tahoe to confirm...?

i,m not 100% certain but if cart ran with solenoid jumped your OBC and controller should both be good......if either were bad i don,t beleive cart would run by jumping solenoid...............i think your solenoid is the issue.................

Well, as I said the solenoid actuates when I apply 48V to the control terminals. This tells me the solenoid works, but the motor controller isn't turning it on.

Any other ideas?
