Charging questions
Hey guys,
I just picked up my new (to me) club car. I checked all the water in the batteries and all water levels looked good. After reading the charger directions is said to plug in and after 5 to 10 secs it would cut on. ( it did ) Then the reading on the charger will read 10 - 15 for a little while and then drop down to 5....... Well I just went to check on it and the needle was past 15 (same as when I pluged it in ) and the charger was hot. Really hot to the touch. So I unpluged and am now writing this. This is my first time charging. What do I do? Is this right? |

Re: Charging questions
Probably not going to burn down the house tonight. But, it's new to you. I wouldn't run it, unattended, the first time. Wait till tomorrow, when you can keep an eye on it while working around the shop or something.
You don't mention the year of the car, the make of the charger, or anything else. Does this charger have a fan in it? Is the fan operating? My charger, an off-brand model sold by LVS Sales, has a fan, and it doesn't get too hot when running. It usually starts off at 12 amps, and several hours later, it has dropped to below 10 amps. However, if run particularly far, it will clear 15 amps and stay there for the first hour or so. So I wouldn't be too worried about your amps. But I'd see if the fan inside is working correctly. |

Re: Charging questions
Thanks guys.
Update: I found an old post basically saying that everything should be ok. So I pluged it back in and after another hour or so the amps did seem to go down slightly. I went to bed and I expected the charger to still be running in the morning, however the charger had already turned itself off. So it ran less than 8 1/2 hours. Does this mean that the batteries could of still had a good charge and it did not need to charge that long? I think the charger runs for 16 hours. Is that everytime you plug it in? Club car Precedent 2008. I think it still has the orignal batteries "Trojan" but the seller swears the batteries are still good. He said it took 2 hours to discharge? They also have some kind of fill system on them? Charger, I have no clue if it has a fan. I think it is the club car charger 3rd version. Ill look later. |

Once again thanks..... OK, so all sounds good then... BTW I just attached a pic of the batteries and fill system... If someone can tell me the name brand it would help.

Re: Charging questions
Well, it looks like they don't. After a read thru the one Powerdrive Maintenance manual I have (2005), it appears that the Powerdrive 1, 2, and GE Powerdrive chargers don't use a fan.
I'm surprised, as my clunky off-brand charger does have one. Anybody want a maintenance manual? |

Re: Charging questions
I do know my charging system is the 3rd gen.
Also, Yes the battery fill unit did not come with all the parts, It seems to be missing a hose and a pump? Any clue of the brand name? This came off the GC and the seller kept it on there but this is all I got with the cart. |
