spline motor couple
New guy here, hi.
I think my couple is stripped on my 98 club car. The motor turns, the car jerks from time to time, but goes no where. I actually replaced the rear end, had the motor checked, new brushes etc, looking inside the couple, it doesnt look bad at all. Put it back together, and its still not moveing. If you kick it or push it along, it will roll. I am pretty sure the couple is spinning on the armeture shaft somehow. Can you replace this, if so how? Thanks |

Re: spline motor couple
Thanks, thats what I am finding, EZ goes are typical, not many folks have experience with the club car. I will try to post pics, but what it looks like is the spline couple is actually a splined bushing that fits or is pressed down in the shaft collar that is attached/welded to the armeture. There is a snap ring on top of the bushing/spline couple.
It reminds me of the old bushings on a boat propeller, they pressed a hub with a spline into the prop. I can see in the bottom of the coupler and on the end of the rear end pinion shaft the bushing is spinning inside of the couple houseing. Cant see how to get it out though, thinking of welding a nut to the top of the bushing and running a bolt down ot the bottom etc. You can buy this couple bushing online for 60 bucks or so. Last night I figured a little more out, now the question is how do you get this bushing out of the shaft collar housing. |

Re: spline motor couple
This just occured to me, instead of welding a nut to the bushing to get it out, any reason I cant tack weld the bushing to the sleave to keep it from spinning?

Re: spline motor couple
never heard of this either......stupid question are you certain your dealing with good batteries? have you load tested them i ask because sometimes the cart will act like that when a battery and your at a certain point of low voltage it can feel like motor is slipping.......................................... .........

Re: spline motor couple
Hey Gydyup,
Look at http://www.golfcartpartsdirect.com/e...tshow/543.html The splines of the differential input shaft go inside the motor shaft. There, they interlock with both the motor shaft and a phenolic "Guide Ring", held in-place by an adhesive and a retaining ring. If you pull the retaining ring, the guide ring will come out. You'll need a new one, as well as the adhesive. The guide ring acts as a cushion between the motor and the input shaft. I know of no way that the motor could "slip" with this coupling. As I said, once you remove the phenolic guide ring, you'll see that the input shaft extends past it and into the internal splines on the motor armature. Hope this helps. Chuck On edit, just thought of something else. Does the cart really "jerk", or just sound like it? If the Guide Ring is bad, the motor keeps hitting the end of the input shaft and it sounds like the motor is bad, the motor bearings are gone, etc. You'd think the cart was going to fall apart right there, on the spot. Re: spline motor couple
Chuck, huge help, this is the set up I have. There is a c-clip that holds the guid e ring on mine, and i can look down the femle couple splines and see a difference in them. Makes sense again, as I am seeing something.
This started when I backed it off the trailer, dropped one wheel off the ramp, tried to "climb" it back on, it wouldnt, spun one tire in sand. Jacked itup, got it off the trailer. Drove it a couple hundred yards, worked normal. Stopped to chat, hit the gas, it jumped, then nothing. When I give it the juice, I hear it vibrating, and the cart sort of surges, like a badly slipping clutch. I can jack it up, and it will spin the tires. I put a new rear end in it, as we (my cart dealer and I) assumed I had busted a rear. Replaced the bushings etc, bearings are all good. When I tried it with the new rear end, same thing, jumped, rolled very slowly and surged like it was trying to go, then go progressivley worse. Again, jacked it up, it will turn the wheels with no weight on them, motor is turning fine, no noise, just humming along. Its quite, there isnt any clunking or metal on metal. Cart guy says my motor is in great shape. The brushes I took out were really decent. I can look down into the couple and see swirls like on the base or at the bottom of the couple hole, and swirls on the chamfer end of the male motor spline shaft. The teeth on the couple and motor splines are not jumping, checked that. So, what do you think? I am out of schlitz on this one. I want to tack that bushing to the shaft, see what happens, dont know if I can make it worse. The Electric Motor guy says it wont hurt the windings. Any help or opinions are welcome here. I am a Ford/Mustang drag car kind of guy, Big Block Fords I am all over, these little electic things kill me. |

Re: spline motor couple
For what it's worth when I replaced the motor in my 98 the input shaft on the motor was well worn. The cart actually shuddered some while driving and made clicking noises in reverse with the motor rpm. I believe the previous owner did a lot of reverse to drive slams at full speed. When the new motor went in it shudders none and the clicking in reverse is gone. So yes I think they can go bad
