Question Battery boiling and cart wont run

I have a 1989 Club Car SR# E89029312 that was running fine all day. Next day after charging, went to move the cart and it went about 6 inches then quit. I heard a little sound like a circuit breaker popped on a home AC circuit.
I checked all batteries and all 6 are at 6.3 volts except 1 which was at 6.1v, with a total voltage of 37.5V
I checked (removed, cleaned and replaced) every major connection on batteries, the solenoid, the V-slide, the wire Resistors, the Fwd/Rev switch, the charger plug and the ignition switch. Had minor corrosion but nothing major.
I opened the cap on the V-Slide and nothing fell out and all looked good and clean.
I jacked up the rear end and blocked it, I turned the rear wheels to make sure the motor had not frozen and one just free-wheeled and the other turned but had the motor drag which seemed normal. I put on my safety glasses and then -

I tried a Solenoid test:
With the key turned on, the gear in fwd and my meter on the 1 and 2 terminals (the small ones), when I pressed the accelerator a number of times trying to get a reading on my meter, the number one battery exploded the cap set off the battery. (I had checked all the battery water levels and left this cap on but not locked.)
The cap literately exploded with a large POP and the cap set went flying.

Once I re-composed myself and lots of checking and washing the acid off my arms and face (thank God for the safety glasses), I tried once again, this time more slowly.
Now I can actually hear the number 1 battery starting to boil when pressing the accelerator.
I did not get what I thought the meter reading should have been (system voltage 36volt or 6 volts) on the solenoid..

Can anyone confirm my problem from my posting? I am thinking the solenoid but too much weird stuff for me.

thanks for any help!
Randy

Did the solenoid spark when you tested it...sounds like the gas from the battery was ignited when you did this test...does solenoid click?

Sounds like the battery may have a short in one cell.

Good thing he had his safety glasses on, eh? Not many people would have taken that precaution.

Copy - Paste, I'm lazy and don't like typing either!

Jeesh, I almost forgot the OP! Like Scott said, most likely a bad battery. Sometimes they will get an internal poor connection and if it's above the level of the electrolyte, when you draw power a spark will jump right into the area where you have a nice hydrogen + oxygen mix and you know the rest!
