Default Battery Connection Pop

I have a 2004 CC Precedent that had a couple of slightly corroded terminal lugs on two different post on different batteries on my cart. I took one off and noticed a slight spark on removal but when I touched the lug to the post on reconnect, it popped loud, like a capacitor had discharged. The key switch was off and the battery charger was not connected. The other lug did the same thing on reconnect. What gives? There must be a more correct way to remove/reconnect the terminals. Thanks.

Did you have the carts tow/run switch in tow?

Or perhaps you have a voltage reducer in the system that would also cause a spark when reconnecting?

The switch was in "run". I've only had the cart a few weeks and this is my first cart ever.

ALWAYS have switch in TOW position when playing with the electric on the cart . . . bad things can happen otherwise . . .
